Biomedical Engineering Curriculum
The School of Engineering offers a program that leads to a Bachelor of Arts in Biomedical Engineering as well as a Biomedical Engineering specialization under Engineering Science that leads to a Bachelor of Science.
The Biomedical Engineering specialization under the Engineering Science (BS) program at The College of New Jersey is designed to provide high achieving high school students the opportunity to pursue a career as design biomedical engineers or graduate study in Biomedical Engineering.
The BA program in Biomedical Engineering program is designed to provide students the opportunity to pursue a technical yet broad education that spans engineering, the physical sciences, and social sciences and humanities. Students who will choose the BA program in Biomedical Engineering value the analytical skills that the study of engineering provides but do not intend to practice as design engineers*. The BA program will be an excellent choice for students who are interested in a “research associate" position or technical management career within the pharmaceutical industry or a hospital setting, or a premedical major.
The BA program requires a minimum of 36 course units whereas the BS degree requires a minimum of 39 course units with the course distributions as shown below:
| Course Distribution | BA-BME | BS-BME Spec. |
| Mathematics | 4 or 5 | 5 |
| Natural Science (Physics/Chemistry) | 6 or 5 | 5 |
| Life Sciences | 2 | 2 |
| Computer Science | 1 | 1 |
| Biomedical Engineering | 15 | 20 |
| Social Science/Humanities | 8 | 6 |
| Total | 36 | 39 |
Students that enroll in either the BA or BS program will have the opportunity to follow one of two curricula options: electrical engineering or mechanical engineering.

As indicated above, the biomedical engineering program will be an excellent choice for students interested in medical school.
The BA program in Biomedical Engineering program at TCNJ is designed to meet all medical school admission requirements. Although admission standards vary, most medical schools require:
- One year of college level calculus
- One year of general chemistry with lab
- One year of general physics with lab
- One year of general biology with lab
- One year of organic chemistry with lab
- At least 24 semester hours of humanities and social sciences
The program meets the above requirements.
