Biomedical Engineering Curriculum

The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering that prepares students for careers as biomedical engineers in industry, in various healthcare settings such as hospitals and medical research facilities or to pursue graduate studies in biomedical engineering. Students are also prepared for medical school admissions with the addition of one course (Organic Chemistry) to the curriculum.

The department offers additional options for students whose goal is to attend medical school. An MD/BS or MD/BA in Biomedical Engineering may be attained in a 7 year program offered in conjunction with the New Jersey Medical School of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The Bachelor of Arts in Biomedical Engineering offers students the opportunity to pursue a technical yet broad education that spans engineering, the physical sciences, and social sciences/ humanities.

The BS degree requires a minimum of 39 course units whereas the BA degree requires a minimum of 36 course units with the course distributions as shown below:

Course Distribution BA-BME BS-BME Spec.
Mathematics 4 or 5 5
Natural Science (Physics/Chemistry) 6 or 5 5
Life Sciences 2 2
Computer Science 1 1
Biomedical Engineering 15 20
Social Science/Humanities 8 6
Total 36 39

Students that enroll in either the BS or BA program will have the opportunity to follow either an electrical or mechanical option.

As indicated above, the biomedical engineering program will be an excellent choice for students interested in medical school.

The BA program in Biomedical Engineering program at TCNJ is designed to meet all medical school admission requirements; the BS program fulfills the requirements with the exception of a second semester of organic chemistry. Although admission standards vary, most medical schools require:

  • One year of college level calculus
  • One year of general chemistry with lab
  • One year of general physics with lab
  • One year of general biology with lab
  • One year of organic chemistry with lab
  • At least 24 semester hours of humanities and social sciences

The program meets the above requirements.
