Student Profile

The student population in engineering is diverse. Approximately 25% are women (one of the highest in the nation) and 12% are African-American, Hispanic, or Native American. The average SAT score for the entering class is in excess of 1300 and the average high school class is above 90th percentile.  Although a co-op program is not required, many of our students obtain summer internships or part-time engineering-related jobs.

Student placement of TCNJ engineering students over the last ten years has been strong and is nearly 100% at graduation most years. Amongst the many corporations that have hired TCNJ engineering students the list includes prestigious corporations such as: Lockheed Martin, ITT, Goldman Sachs, IBM, Johnson and Johnson, Boeing, PSE&G, Mobil, Bristol-Myers Squibb, General Motors, Lucent Technologies, Raytheon, Merck, Johnson Controls, General Dynamics, MicroSoft, Hoechst Celanese, Ingersoll-Rand, Mobil, L'Oreal Industries, Washington Group, U.S. Army CECOM, and York International, Delphi Technologies, Ortho McNeil Pharmaceutical, Mitre, General Electric, U.S. Steel, Physical Acoustics, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, and CUH2A.

Graduate and Professional School Acceptance

Many of our graduates pursue further education in graduate or professional school. Students going onto graduate school have been very successful in competing for fellowships and scholarships that completely fund their graduate education. Students have also been well-prepared to compete for law school and medical school admission. Students have enrolled in colleges and universities across the country including: Johns Hopkins, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, The University of Michigan, The University of Pennsylvania, Georgia Institute of Technology, Cornell, Florida State University, Dartmouth, Purdue, Drexel, Notre Dame, Arizona State University, Penn State University, Lehigh, Rutgers, Villanova, and the University of Washington.

Performance on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination

The Fundamentals of Engineering examination is the first test a graduate of an ABET accredited engineering program must pass in order to achieve registration as a Professional Engineer (PE). It is administered twice a year nationally at the same time. The engineering program at TCNJ is the first engineering program in the State of New Jersey to require (starting with 2001 graduating class) that all graduates take the exam prior to graduation (Occasionally, students have been exempted from taking the exam if they are participating in a national student design competition the same day the exam is given).
