International Studies 200-01
Spring 2006 Semester

Introduction:
This webpage is designed to reflect a global awareness of world issues and events. By focusing on a few aspects of globalization, larger course themes may be understood. Globalization can be defined as "the process of increasing interconnectedness between societies such that events in one part of the world more and more have effects on people and societies far away" (Kelleher and Klein 17). The Colonialism section will provide a brief background of the historical practice, and explain how King Leopold's Ghost demonstrates the connection between history and today's geopolitical landscape. The Human Rights section will examine the global issue of human rights in society. Finally, Russia and the War in Chechnya will serve as a case study of the issue of contemporary human rights, and reflect the importance of outside research in furthering course themes.
