Philly Runners!

------------------------>VISIT OUR NEW WEBSITE here!!!!

------------------------>Some information on here may be out of date.

You can pick up flyers at Rittenhouse Sports Specialties at 1729 Chestnut St (ask the owner, Karen, who generously agreed to display them) and at Lloyd Hall on Boathouse Row (Joe Cook is the gentleman in charge who allows them).

This web page gives information on the informal running group in Center City Philly. It had occurred to some of us that there was no general running group focused on center city Philadelphia that is open to all runners! There are active clubs in Northeast Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr, Valley Forge, Haddonfield NJ (among others), but nothing was available for the center of the 5th largest city in the country! Now there is, having started in spring 2002, and we have well over 300 people in the group.

Membership & Fees: Since this is an informal group, there are currently no membership fees. A list is maintained (go to the end of this page to be added), but this is for emails to notify members of events. The email addresses (and other pertinent information), will be kept confidential. You do not need to be on the email list to join us on any run.

Scheduled Runs & Activities: For now, we have four regularly scheduled runs: Saturday morning 9:30 am, Tuesday evening 6:30 pm, and 6:30 am Monday and Thursday morning. We also have post-run dinner and brunch gatherings after some runs at nearby restaurants (not very fancy ones; after all, some of us might be a little sweaty!), or occasionally at one of our homes. Distances and speeds will be determined by the group. We split into multiple groups based on pace and distance, so you can run with whichever group best matches your skill. All levels of runners are welcome to attend, though elite/Olympic runners might be a little bored! Hey, you can still join us for one of your "easy" runs! Generally, on Saturdays, most people run 4.4 - 8.4+ miles, at paces of 7:00 - 10:00 minutes per mile. We have faster & slower paces, longer & shorter distances, but the above holds for most of us. On Tuesdays, most run 4.4 - 6 miles, at similar paces (faster & slower, longer & shorter as well). These runs are NEVER cancelled! The Mon & Thu runs are for intermediate level runners, at a 7:30 - 8:30 minute per mile pace for 5 - 6 miles.

Run Locations: All four runs start at the bottom right of the front steps to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (that is, if you are facing the art museum, we're on the right). They end there also, unless perhaps we are running to a restaurant to eat! In the future, depending on demand, runs may start/end at different locations, but for now, this is the most convenient for us. We generally run along Kelly Drive during the week and both West River Drive and Kelly Drive on weekends.

NEW ADDITIONAL RUNS: We currently have additional runs, but they are not official. One that may become official is a Wed 6:45 speedwork track workout.

Other Info: Since this is an informal group, there are currently no membership fees. A list is maintained, but this is for emails to notify members of events. You will not be placed on any other "list" nor will any information you give be used for any type of commercial/political/charitable/etc. marketing endeavor. In addition to the runs, by joining, you will receive a weekly group email update which may include invitations to our special events and activities.

You do not need to be on the email list to join us on any run, but you must sign the waiver in person to be associated with us in any way.

The waiver, for your reference, is below.

In joining Philly Runners, I realize that running includes certain risks, and that there is no obligation to join any run or to run at a pace or distance with which I am not comfortable. I realize that the runs are informal and held on a public thoroughfare, the condition of which Philly Runners does not control. Weather, traffic, lighting, and other factors may influence the conditions for running on any given day, and in agreeing to join the club for these informal runs, I release Philly Runners, its officers and its members from any responsibility for injury or other hardship I may suffer as a result of running. I understand that some runs will be held after sunrise or before sunset and that it may be dark during all or part of some runs. I agree that it is my responsibility to wear appropriate reflective gear on these runs and that if I am injured by my failure to do so that I will not hold Philly Runners, its officers or members responsible in any way. I accept full responsibility for my own fitness and health and understand that Philly Runners and any person or persons assisting any activity of the club can in no way be held accountable if my effort surpasses my level of fitness and conditioning. I voluntarily join this organization.

Since this is only an informal running club, I understand that running can be a dangerous and hazardous activity, and agree to hold all those involved in the club and/or on the email list not responsible for any type of injuries. I am not owed any duty or obligation by those involved in the club, including, but not limited to, ensuring that I have a safe running environment, ensuring that I am in adequate shape, or ensuring that I am properly warmed up. I agree not to run with the club unless I am medically able and properly trained. I waive and release all persons in the running club and/or those running with the club from any claims and liabilities of any kind arising out of participation in the runs or any other club activities. I assume all risks associated with running including but not limited to falls, insect bites and stings, contact with other runners, the effects of the weather, traffic, and the conditions of the running course. I assume all risks associated with participating in any and all non-running activities organized by the club. I agree that this waiver shall be binding upon myself, my heirs and assigns.

The map below shows "the loop" along the Schuylkill River. Kelly Drive is on the right (east) side, with West River Drive on the opposite. The loop is a flat 8.4 miles. The Kelly Drive path is wide and smooth in great condition. The West River Drive path is not as wide, but on the weekend during the day from April to October, the actual ROAD is closed to cars!

Comments on our group:
•   "...but still, I am very glad that I found your site long time ago and that I have you and the others out there to talk to and join for runs whenever possible. Just because I can almost never make it to the scheduled runs does not mean that the club is not a very important part of my running psychology. It's a mind thing. I keep you guys in my head and heart and to tell you the truth, the knowledge that you guys are out there running, and the fact that we talk all the time, well, it helps me keep running on my own time :)" -Iveline (Eve) N
•   "I want to drop a line of thank you as I am sure, if there had not been the Saturday morning runs, I would have partied muuuuuch more on Fridays and achieving my goal of running the NY marathon would have been harder to achieve." -Wolfgang A
•   "I also just wanted to thank you and the group for helping me with my running and challenging me every Saturday morning- those are real killers, but its great training, and without the group I wouldn't be training as well as I am. I'm very glad I found the group and again, thank you guys!" -Rick L

Future Plans: In the near future, the map above will have more mileage distances to help you plan your runs. In the more distant future, I may form alliances with some of the clubs I listed above (I'm a member of the Bike Club of Philadelphia), some area hotels (hey, their guests sometimes need to go running too, and might not want to be indoors on a treadmill), perhaps some restaurants that we might frequent after the runs, running stores in the area, and maybe something with other local and non-local running groups! I've read that the Four Seasons, Rittenhouse, and Ritz-Carlton hotels have running maps for their guests, along with the Visitor's Center, so these are places to start. Maybe we'll have a newsletter, maybe a t-shirt, maybe a team to compete in local races!

If you wish to be added to the email list or have any comments or questions, let me know. Please supply your name and email address. You may also state where you live (address or area of Philly or other town), phone number, what year you started running, how often you run, what distances/speeds you like to run, your skill level, how you heard about the group (referred by whom? picked up a flyer where?), and any other important relevant information! Go to the new website here and click the "How To Join" link.

Please let me know if any of the links or info are out of date!
