Welcome to the History Department!
History majors at the College of New Jersey are prepared to confront the future. They learn how to read critically, write effectively, and speak clearly--critical skills for personal success. With their knowledge of the past, they are intellectually equipped to understand and address the significant issues of today's and tomorrow's world.
The fourteen full-time faculty members in the History Department have expertise that encompasses all major geographic and cultural regions of the world, in both the premodern and modern eras. Through their coursework, students gain a global perspective spanning the entire planet from ancient times to the present.
Recent graduates from this department are currently enrolled in post-graduate programs at universities in Europe and North America. They are traveling the world on fellowships and internships with Environment America, the Garden of the Righteous Worldwide in Sarajevo, and Teach for America at a Navajo Indian Reservation. They are studying law, business, and medicine, and pursuing new careers in business, museum curating, and government service. Many have earned credentials to teach and are now working in elementary and secondary education throughout New Jersey. We train teachers who both possess a solid command of history and know how to communicate its fascination to young people.
