Language Study
Language and the History Major
The History Department strongly encourages students to study at least one language at TCNJ and to take advantage of the opportunity to broaden their cultural horizon by reaching beyond their high school language to study such critical languages as Arabic, Persian, Chinese, Japanese or Russian.

Intensive Elementary Language Courses
Below is an example of the new Fall 2010 intensive language offerings in Russian and Arabic. For more information on language study at The College of New Jersey, please visit the Modern Languages Department at www.tcnj.edu/~modlang.
These intensive classes meet Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays for the regular 80-minute class session and again on Wednesdays for a 50-minute conversation hour. Each class is worth 2 (two) units per semester (8 credits).
Course Description: Intensive Arabic This is an intensive introduction to spoken and written Arabic, emphasizing aural comprehension and speaking, accompanied by practice in reading and writing. Cultural audio-visual materials complement written course materials and emphasize the link between language and culture. Conversation hour is required. ARA 151 replaces ARA 101 and 102, and covers the material from these two courses in a single semester. Students enrolled in ARA 151 will earn 2 units (8 credits) for the course. Prerequisites There are no prerequisites for this course, and the course assumes no prior knowledge of Arabic. Students who have studied Arabic prior to enrolling at The College of New Jersey should consult with the professor regarding adequate placement before registering. |
Even if you are not interested in working in the CIA, language skills
will play a very important role in your career opportunities if you are
interested in jobs in the federal government (law enforcement/justice
department, energy department, commerce department, state department) or
in international business. See this link for an example:
