V. Advising and Mentoring Record
Academic
Advising
Since my hiring at TCNJ I have served as the academic
advisor for an average of 25 students per semester. My responsibilities as an academic advisor
consist of: reviewing/discussing
upcoming course selection during the registration period, discussing summer
internship or post-graduation employment opportunities, discussing quality of
life and general observations with the students.
Senior Design
Project Advisor
In addition to being an academic advisor I have also served
as a Senior Design Project Advisor for an average of 3 Senior Design Projects
per year. My responsibilities as a
Senior Project Advisor include: holding weekly meetings with the various groups
to discuss progress and future expectations, giving guidance for technical
difficulties the students may have with respect to their project, reviewing and
commenting on project reports, supplying critical feedback on project
presentations.
Student
Organization Faculty Advisor
Since my hiring at TCNJ I have served as the faculty advisor
to four student organizations at TCNJ.
The organizations and my role in each of these organizations is
discussed below.
TCNJ Environmental Club (formerly: Water Watch)
This club was in existence prior to my arrival at TCNJ. The club is well established and needs
minimal advisor support. My specific
role as advisor is to help guide the development and activities of the club as
well as mentor/instruct the members in areas related to water and water
resources.
Humanitarian Engineering (formerly: Engineers without
Borders)
This club was established by myself upon arrival at TCNJ as
a full-time faculty member. The current
enrollment of the club is approximately 20 students (all engineering). The purpose of the club is to complete
projects which ultimately lead to implementing sustainable engineering design
solutions for the benefit of underprivileged and developing communities. The group has completed three projects located
in Northern Thailand. The scope of all
of the projects relate to the design and implementation of water supply and
distribution systems. My specific role
as faculty advisor is to help the students find an appropriate project, oversee
fundraising initiatives developed by the students, attend all chapter meetings,
coordinate all travel logistics, and serve as a technical advisor for any
projects worked on by the organization.
Sigma Pi Fraternity
This fraternity was in existence prior to my arrival at TCNJ. I have served as the fraternity’s faculty
advisor since 2011. The fraternity
requires minimal advisor support.
TCNJ - Mixed Martial Arts Club
This club was established by myself upon arrival at TCNJ as
a full-time faculty member. The current
enrollment for the club is approximately 15 students. The purpose of the club is to teach students
an effective style of self-defense which will promote the development of
self-worth and confidence.
