HEC-RAS Unsteady Flow Course

About:   

HEC-RAS is one of the most utilized software programs in Civil Engineering.  This two day seminar and computer workshop will prepare participants to use HEC-RAS  for Unsteady Flow applications.  Specific topics include: river mechanics and the unsteady flow equations; using HEC-DSS data with HEC-RAS; overview of unsteady flow modeling; data requirements for unsteady flow models; boundary and conditions;  overview of model output; inline and lateral hydraulic structures; storage areas and storage connections; and trouble shooting.  Each topic will be introduced with an overview of the underlying theory and equations that the program utilizes as part of its solution algorithm.  Participants then will spend a significant amount of time completing hands-on workshops designed to familiarize themselves with that particular aspect of the program.

Prerequisites:

Participants must have a good background in open channel hydraulics and be familiar with the HEC-RAS software.  Basic HEC-RAS input and output data requirements WILL NOT be covered in this class.  It will be assumed that you already know how to use the software for performing a steady flow analysis.  Familiarity with the unsteady flow equations and numerical solution techniques is desirable.  Participants should be in positions requiring them to perform complex hydraulic analysis

Who Should Attend
Consulting engineers, Water resource planners, Engineers employed by local, state and federal
government agencies.  Participants should have some experience in floodplain hydraulics and hydrology.

About the Instructor
Dr. Horst is a registered professional engineer in the state of Pennsylvania with over 20 years of practical water resources engineering experience, the types of projects he has completed include:

·          Floodplains delineation of various stream networks using HEC-RAS
·          Bridge hydraulics analysis / Backwater effects using HEC-RAS
·          Culvert hydraulics analysis / Backwater effects using HEC-RAS
·          Spatially varied flow analysis of Levee overtopping
·          Bridge scour computations using HEC-18 & HEC-RAS
·          Unsteady flow modeling using HEC-RAS
·          PMF prediction for both gauged and un-gauged drainage basins
·          Site specific unit hydrograph determination for gauged basins
·          Dam breach analysis using HEC-1 & HEC-RAS
·          Breach induced flood-wave routing using HEC-1 & HEC-RAS
·          Dam/Spillway sizing for desired return period flow
·          HEC-2 modeling of simple stream systems

He received his B.S, M.Eng, and Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University, all with an emphasis on water resources engineering. 
Currently, Dr. Horst teaches water resources and environmental engineering classes within the Department of Civil Engineering at The College of New Jersey.  Additionally he has been teaching continuing education short courses for the benefit of practicing engineers since 1997.
