Prerequisites

Making a Connection for TCNJ

You will only need to perform the steps in this section once.

  1. Download one of the following files to the directory where Trumpet Winsock resides (probably C:\INTERNET).
  2. Go to a DOS Prompt and change to the directory where you downloaded one of the above files.
    Example: CD \INTERNET
  3. Type hayes or usr depending on which one you downloaded. It should extract three files: local.cmd, oncampus.cmd and longdist.cmd. All three files are almost identical except for how it specifies the phone number to dial.
  4. Exit back into Windows and run Trumpet Winsock, but don't dial in yet.
  5. Go to Setup and check the PPP box. The SLIP box will become unchecked.
  6. You will need to quit Trumpet Winsock and restart it for the changes to take effect.

Using the TCNJ Connection to Connect to the College

Follow these instructions each time you want to dial into the College.

  1. Start Trumpet Winsock if it isn't already running.
  2. Go to the Dialler menu option and choose either local if the College is a local phone call; longdist if it is long distance; or oncampus if you are dialing from an on-campus phone. Don't use the login menu option since it is configured for SLIP dial-in. If you want to use the login menu option, you can copy the appropriate file (local.cmd, longdist.cmd or oncampus.cmd) over the login.cmd file.
  3. You can now run your WINSOCK compliant applications like Netscape, QWS3270, etc.
  4. When you are done, quit all WINSOCK applications.
  5. Choose Bye from the Dialler menu in Trumpet Winsock. After you are disconnected, you can quit Trumpet Winsock.

Long distance callers may need to modify the $phonenum variable in longdist.cmd to use the appropriate long distance service and/or calling card number. It is currently setup to dial 1-609-637-5300. To modify the script, choose Edit Script from the Dialler menu.

You will also need to modify the scripts if you want to dial the other system. Here are the appropriate phone numbers:
