Basketball Rules
GENERAL INFORMATION
1. All Intramural Guidelines will apply.
2. No black soled shoes allowed.
3. Each team must provide a score keeper or a forfeit will be awarded!
4. Be at the game site 10 minutes before your game.
5. All official's judgments are final, so don't argue.
6. All teams must have numbered and color-coordinated shirts by the 3rd game or a foul shot will be awarded for each violation at the start of the game and the start of the second half.
7. Check out practice ball at control desk, bring your I.D.
8. Only the captain may speak to officials.
9. Absolutely NO dunking!
10. No spectators allowed - Only players on entry card are permitted downstairs. Spectators must watch from mezzanine.
11. Anyone playing or assumed to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be ejected from the game and subject to suspension for one calendar year from all intramural and recreation activities.
RULES
1. The league will be broken into three divisions: A, B, & Women's. A $20.00 refundable forfeit fee is required with each entry card.
2. Fees are transferable from other programs.
3. All teams entering must have color-coordinated team shirts with numbers on the back. Half number and three digit numbers are not permitted. Failure to comply will result in a technical foul shot for each player present who is in violation. Continued violations will result in a forfeit.
4. The second team listed on the schedule will represent the HOME TEAM.
5. Each team must supply one individual to keep time or score. Players may not be utilized for this purpose. Failure to comply will result in a possible forfeit.
6. Spectators will not be premitted in or around the court areas.
7. Practice balls may be obtained from the Equipment Room area located at the control desk. Current TCNJ I.D. cards are required for check-out.
8. Team captains and players are responsible for understanding all game rules and the currect edition of the TCNJ Intramural Guidelines.
9. Players are to report to game sites at least 10 minutes prior to scheduled starting time. In case of inclement wetather, please contact the IM office (771-2712) to verify game cancellation.
10. Games will consist of (2) two twenty minutes halves (running time). The clock will stop during the following times only:
a. All whistles and shooting fould during the last two minutes of each half.
b. Time outs
c. Half time (a five minutes period of time)
d. GAME TIME IS FORFEIT TIME
11. Two 60-second times outs per team, per half. They do not carry over. One time out per team per (5) five minute overtime periods. They do not carry over into extra overtime periods. Clock stops on all whistles during the last minute of an overtime period.
12. No dunking at any time. Violation will result in a technical foul and player disqualification.
13. Teams will be shooting one and one fould on the 6th team foul.
14. Players will be ejected from the game on their 5th foul.
15. Team captains are responsible for signing the players on the score sheets (PLEASE PRINT LEGIBLY). Any player arriving late who is not signed in on the score sheet will be assessed a technical foul when that player enters the game.
16. A game may begin with four players and end with no less than two.
17. Teams needing players should contact the IM office at 771-2712.
18. Team captains are responsible for informing all team members of playing times and dates.
19. Eligibility - All TCNJ students, faculty and staff. Individuals receiving a major sport letter in basketball since March 1996 from a college or university are eligible to participate on any one team. Refer to the IM Handbook. Current TCNJ basketball players are NOT eligible.
20. Any player who is ejected from a game must leave the building within two minutes of the ejection or that player's team will be subject to forfeit.
21. The game, 2nd half and all overtime periods will oficially begin when the officials toss the game ball at center court for a jump ball.
22. All officials judgments are final. Only misinterpretation of rules may be protested. All rule interpretation protests must be brought to the attention of the official, the other team captain and then the program supervisor on duty. The protest must be made in writing and submitted to the Rec Center within 24 hours. Please refer to pg. 9 of the IM-Rec Handbook.
23. The officials shall have the power to make decisions on any points not specifically covered in the rules.
24. The officials shall penalize unsportsmanlike conduct by any player, coach, substitute, team attendant or follower.
25. The captain is the representative of his/her team and may address an official on matters of interpretation or to obtain essential info, if it is done in a couteous manner.
26. A substitute who desires to enter the game shall report to the scorer table. If entry is at any time other than between halves, the substitute must wait for a time out or a dead ball and can enter only after the scorers horn sounds and when recognized by the officials. Failure to comply will result in a technical foul.
27. The following violations will be enforced:
a. Blocking foul n. Intentional foul
b. Double foul o. Multiple fouls
c. Common foul p. Personal foul
d. Flagrant foul q. Player control foul
e. Technical foul r. Five second rule
f. Unsportsmanlike foul s. Kicking Ball (un/intentional)
g. Traveling t. 10 second rule

i. Back Court Violation v. Delay of game
j. Out of bounds w. Unstationary Screen
k. Double Dribble x. Any moving or stationary violation which
l. Improper Alignment on a jump ball the officials deem illegal.
m. Offense in the key for 3 seconds
28. No players may enter the free throw lane until the shooter has released the shot. Failure to comply will result in a violation:
offensive - Ball is inbounded by opposing team
defensive - Extra shot is attempted if the shooter fails to be successful
29. All parts of the back boards are considered in play. When the ball comes in contact with a brace supporting the back board it is a dead ball.
30. Any successful shot which is attempted by a player prior to an offensive foul is considered good.
31. Any time an offensive player attempts a shot by jumping straight up the defender must allow him space to come down.
32. The hand is not considered part of the ball.
33. A defensive player who is stationary is allowed to jump straight up to deter an offensive player but may not attempt any swinging motion of any sort. Compliance, offensive player is awarded an offensive foul; failure to comply, defensive player received a personal foul.
34. A potential rebounder may not back into any other player.
35. Rules and regulations may be amended or updated at any time to insure fair play.
36. Technical fould will be considered as a personal foul.
37. Three point play - Three points will be awarded if a basked is made whenthe shot leaves the hand with both feet behind the green and/or white line arc. The feet may land inside the arc. If a foul is committed by the defense, 3 free throw attempts will be awarded.
