The Islamic Society of The College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College), was founded as an organization on campus in 1994 the guidance of Dr. Ismail and a few enthusiastic students. These founding members were as follows: Zahid Hussain, Christine Saraceni, Zohra Awan, Saidah Abdulhaqq, and Ali Naquvi. The organization thus gained 4 more students near the end of the fall semester and added two more in the spring. Composed of these students the society aimed not only in providing a sense of place for the college's Muslim students, but also to create a presence on campus. Looking at ourselves today, we find that we have grown from these meager beginnings to an organization of many Muslims and Non-Muslims, Alhumdulillah, and Insha-Allah we will continue to grow.
Today, as a society, we aim to enlighten the TCNJ community and others outside this institution about our faith, and share with them this religion which is most important to us. We strive to dispel all misconceptions associated with Islam by arming ourselves with knowledge so that we may defend ourselves and keep ourselves from falling prey to ignorance, apathy and the many temptations that perforate this society. We work to illuminate the realization that we are walking examples of our deen and that we are reflections of the entire Muslim community and that "The believer is a mirror of the believer." We labor not to serve ourselves, but to serve Islam and its Ummah.
It is a well-known fact that in order to have a successful association, cohesion within the organization is paramount. We as a society have strived to achieve this unity through our weekly meetings, community service and social events, and also by encouraging members to become friends outside of the organization. By achieving a sense of unity, we become no longer a collection of individuals, but instead, a society of one.
