Web Accessibility
What is Web Accessibility?
Web Accessibility is the term used to describe a site that allows anyone using a web browser to visit, have a thorough understanding of, and maneuver around and through all aspects of the information.
Why is Web Accessibility important?
Many Web sites are not accessible. This makes it difficult for all users to access information equally. Approximately 20 percent of the U.S. population (40.8 million individuals) has some type of disability, 10 percent (27.3 million individuals) is severely disabled. Access to the internet for those individuals with severe disabilities is very limited.
Our Goal
The solutions and the technology to overcome these limitations already exist. They are, however, frequently under-utilized. Web developers who are under informed about the techniques available to design or redesign pages that are accessible to the population with disabilities is the common cause of increasing limitations. Our goal is to raise awareness of these limitations and to empower web developers with the tools to remove unnecessary barriers, improving equality of access to web based information.
