Conference Presentations and Publications

Many of the IT and ES staff members present valuable information at national, regional and local conferences.  The listings below show examples of these presentations.  In addition to these presentations, The Center for Institutional Effectiveness maintains a website of the presentations provided by CIE staff at http://www.tcnj.edu/~assess/archives.html

March 2010

Several TCNJ staff members presented at the annual HEUG conference in San Antonio, Texas.  The Higher Education User Group (HEUG) is an international organization consisting of Higher Education institutions that use application software from the Oracle Corporation.

Updating Entrance Checklist Using Automation

Dionne Hallback presented "TCNJ - Updating Entrance Checklist Using Automation".  The presentation demonstrated how to load Direct Loan Entrance Files provided by the Common Origination Disbursement into PeopleSoft.  In addition, TCNJ developed a process to update the Entrance Loan Counseling checklist item and update the Entrance Interview Status field on the Packaging Status Summary page to complete using automation. The functionality used is the 3C Engine, Population Selection and Population Update.

Picture Perfect - Batch Process to load photos into Oracle 9.0 Campus Solutions

Sushma Mendu presented "Picture Perfect".  TCNJ acquires photos for all its students and employees in the IDWorks software. When we went live with the 9.0 Campus Solutions, we needed to load 15,000 photos into the Oracle system to be accessible through the delivered pages to the various offices on campus. The manual process would mean uploading one photo at a time and Oracle does not have a delivered batch load photo process so we developed a PL/SQL script to load source jpg files as blobs into our Oracle 10g database.

Students Grant Parents Access to Student Self-Service

Eileen Rose presented "Students Grant Parents Access to Student Self-Service." The presentation demonstrated how students create user profiles, grant roles, and assign passwords and pins for their parents and others within TCNJ's PAWS Student System. Students become their parent’s security administrators. Students create, modify, lock, and delete parent’s access without the direct involvement of TCNJ. Using the bolt-on setup, TCNJ manages the capabilities students may grant their parents. The Auxiliary Access modification allows parents to view and pay their student's bill, view financial award information and view their student’s academic records. It has been embraced by both parents and students.

How Can We Be More Effective and Efficient in Campus Solutions

Nicole Parkman presented "How Can We Be More Effective and Efficient in Campus Solutions". We all hear 'on time, on budget.' But there are other ways to measure the success of your project or the use of your system! This session dug deep into some ways to look in Campus Solutions and evaluate opportunities to identify bottlenecks and improve business processing. Using query and analytics, Nicole provided some opportunities for her audience to look into the system and take a pulse check to see how various areas are doing. This session also reviewed how TCNJ used data to improve business process.

Campus Solutions Feature Pack; Friend or Foe

Nicole Parkman presented "Campus Solutions Feature Pack; Friend or Foe". Oracle recently announced that they have changed their upgrade methodology for how they deliver new functionality to the Higher Education Industry. This methodology is called "Continuous Delivery" and it means no more timely, resource draining, expensive upgrades. New feature packs are targeted to be released twice a year and will allow Oracle to deliver functionality and enhancements to institutions faster and eliminate the need for institutions to go through time consuming and costly upgrades. Institutions need to be prepared for the budgetary and staffing impact this type of methodology change could cause. The staffing impact comes from the notion that between the installation of both Maintenance Packs AND Feature Packs many of the technical and functional staff will have to be almost 100 percent dedicated to keeping current with the releases. With major upgrades in the past, institutions have used back-fill and/or consulting to cover the extra work load. Nicole outlined some options to help institutions prepare for the future.

Modify your own XML Transcript

Libby Alcaro presented "Modify your own XML Transcript". This presentation provided a step by step view on how the functional team adjusted the delivered XML transcript template to meet the institutional needs, without using our limited technical resources.
