Non-Standard Applications Support and Security Requirements

Last Revised: 11/18/04

Information Technology provides services to support specific microcomputer technologies standardized at The College of New Jersey. These products are selected to satisfy the common technology needs of the College's microcomputer users. A vast number of products on the market are proprietary and not supported with technologies at TCNJ. These are products for which User Support Services is unable to offer any service level guarantees. Faculty members serve as the content specialists and assume responsibility for all aspects for the use of specialized software and hardware including student orientation. Workstations and/or servers that are “self administered" by faculty fall into this category and are the sole responsibility of the individual administering the hardware or software.

While it is impossible to guarantee that a computing server is 100 percent secure, faculty members who maintain their own computing servers for research or other purposes must perform due diligence when it comes to the security of their servers and the privacy of the personal information stored on it.  Where appropriate, security patches, anti-virus updates and configurations that promote server security should be established.  The Information Technology department may also require that additional security protocols be followed while the server is connected to the campus network.  In the event of a security incident or other disruption originating from the faculty member’s server, the Information Technology department may need to disable some or all of the server’s network access to protect the other computing assets at the college.
