The Japanese Language Program Curriculum

**As of Fall 2008, Japanese 101 will no longer be offered in the spring semester. If you want to begin your study of Japanese at TCNJ you MUST take JPN101 in the Fall.**
Course offerings
JPN 101, 102, 103/Japanese for Beginners I, II, III: 1 course unit each (JPN101 Fall semester annually, JPN102 Spring semester annually, JPN103 Fall semester annually)
An introduction to spoken and written Japanese, emphasizing aural comprehension and speaking, accompanied by practice in reading and writing. Cultural audio-visual materials complement the textbook and emphasize the link between language and culture.
Students with four or more years of high school study in Japanese will not receive credit for 101.JPN 201/202 Intermediate Japanese I, II: 1 course unit each (annually)
Prerequisite: JPN 103 or permission of instructor
Additional practice in spoken and written Japanese, emphasizing increased skill acquisition. Ancillary materials stress appreciation of the Japanese culture. Conversation hour is required.JPN 301/Advanced Japanese I 1 course unit (annually)
Prerequisites: JPN 202
This class is designed for students who have already taken JPN 101, 102, 103, 201 and 202 or have equivalent knowledge and skills of that level. The objectives of this course are to: understand everyday conversations, acquire more advanced effective communication skills, using appropriate sentences and vocabulary, acquire reading skills, including skimming, scanning, and intensive reading, acquire writing skills, including descriptions and some functional writing tasks, such as letter writing, and to acquire socio-cultural information on the Japanese language and people.JPN 302/Advanced Japanese II 1 course unit (annually)
Prerequisites: JPN 301
This class is designed for students who have already taken JPN 101, 102, 103, 201, 202, and 301 or have equivalent knowledge and skills of that level. JPN 370/Topics in Japanese: 1 course unit (ocassionally)
Prerequisite: 200-level course or permission of instructor. Focuses on a different topic each time it is offered.
JPN 371/Topics in Japanese (taught in English): 1 course unit (ocassionally)
Focuses on a different topic each semester.
JPN 391/Independent Study in Japanese: variable course units
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor
Study of topic related to Japanese language, culture, or literature chosen after consultation between student and instructor.
