Henry IV Part
1
Jigsaw Activity:
Rebellion against the Law
Directions: Look at the attached political cartoon
and answer the questions below.
- This cartoon lists the differences between England and
France in 1792. What is positive qualities does it attribute to England?
- What negative qualities does it give to France?
- Which qualities exist in King Henry IV’s kingdom? Give
examples of how each is present.
- What other examples of rebellion against the law exist
in Henry’s kingdom? (Hint: think of the tavern).
- Reread Act 2, Scene 2, lines 55-59. What do Falstaff and
his gang rob? How does this contribute to the parallel to Percy’s rebellion?
.
- At the end of Act 2, Hal says he will restore the money
Falstaff stole. If this parallel exists, what can we say about Hal’s role in
fighting the rebellion?
- Create your own political cartoon:
Relate Falstaff’s rebellion
against the law (in the highway robberies) to Hotsper's rebellion.
Some ideas:
Falstaff, dressed in military
garb, stealing King Henry’s throne.
Hotspur, pretending to be a
highway robber, binding King Henry.
