ENG 142 Fundamentals of Engineering Design

Open-ended Project: golfingbot

A team of three or four students will design and build a robot (called golfingBot) that can play golf on a customized course under specific rules. The course is a 12 ft. × 6 ft. rectangle with three out-of-ground holes and several obstacles. The robot will have the ability to follow a path, carry three golf balls at the same time, and drop only one golf ball into each hole. The robot must be autonomous once leaving the starting location and returning and stopping at the same location. Lego Mindstorm robotics kits are provided to students as a design resource. At the end of the semester, all the robots will be tested during a golfingBot competition.

Reverse Engineering Project: flashlight

Commercial flashlights are given to students. Students practice all aspects of RE method by dissembling the flashlight and working out its mechanical and electrical information and functionalities. They then reproduce it into a virtual product (i.e., a 3D  CAD model) using Pro/E.
