Introduction
The purpose of this assignment is to increase my own understanding of web development and, in doing so, broaden my knowledge of html, css, and other elements of web site markup, design, and management.
Web Site Theme
This project will focus on the creation of a web presence for the New Jersey Association of Senior Center Directors (NJASD). As a volunteer at the East Windsor Senior Center for several years, I am actively involved with local senior citizens and frequently work to promote their overall well-being. Recently, the coordinator of the East Windsor Senior Center, Amy Bauman, informed me that the NJASD is currently looking to create a web site for their organization. I informed her that I was interested and contacted the president of the NJASD, Lynn Thornton, who was delighted to learn of my proposal. Mrs. Thornton agreed to provide me with the appropriate materials and information needed to complete an initial model for the site, which will be the basis of my work in this class.
As this web site will be geared toward an aging population, one goal of this web site will be to properly format the appearance and design of the pages so that seniors with handicaps and physical impairments will be able to enjoy the site. Through the use of CSS and dreamweaver tools, I will develop a site that can be easily changed and modified to accommodate necessary accessibility issues that may arise in the future.
This site will most likely consist of the following elements:
- A homepage with an easy to understand navigation system
- An event calendar that lists upcoming meetings and senior center events at various locations
- A feedback form for contacting the NJASD with requests, comments, or general inquiries
- A links page with helpful information for senior center coordinators and their patrons
- A page containing general information about NJASD and their mission statement
- A page listing all NJASD members and their senior center associations
- A consistent CSS style that may be implemented throughout the entire site.
- A navigational menu with roll-over buttons to provide clearly stated links to travel through the site.
- Graphical elements to aid individuals with understanding information throughout the site, as well as providing aesthetic appeal for all visitors
- A calendar of events created using tables to list upcoming events for the NJASD
- A "spreadsheet" like page containing contact information for all New Jersey senior center coordinators and the centers that they run.
Challenges
I would like to be able to incorporate auditory as well as visual elements into the site design, so that individuals with hearing or sight impairments may navigate easily.
I would like to be able to embed certain fonts into the site, so that individuals are able to read fonts that are easily viewable for all.
I would like to utilize dreamweaver templates to easily update the site once the initial creation has been completed.
The site design should remain somewhat flexible, so that updates may be made by others who may require access to the site
Respectfully submitted
