The Free/Libre and Open Source Software Movements

Course Description

Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects such as the GNU/Linux operating system, Apache web server, and Firefox web browser are used because of their high quality and zero cost. However, the availability of high quality software at no cost is only one reason for the success of the FLOSS movements. FLOSS derives from two similar but incompatible movements: the Free (or Libre) Software movement and the Open Source Software movement. The Free Software Movement seeks to guarantee the right of the user to learn from, change, and redistribute software source code. The Open Source Software movement seeks to increase software quality by following the open source model. This seminar focuses on the cultural, philosophical, and political aspects of the FLOSS movements. Related open movements also are discussed. (This seminar focuses attention on computer software, students are not expected to do any programming or similar tasks).
