Encountering China

Course Description

This course examines ways in which a variety of Westerners, principally Americans, have reacted to China.  It focuses on those who stayed long enough to learn the language and become familiar with the culture—first the missionaries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who lived in the old China but hoped for a new China, and then their successors, the students, teachers, historians, and journalists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.  The emergence of China since 1980 as a powerful and productive nation is one of the biggest stories of our time.  We look at the new China through the eyes of those outsiders best entitled to have an opinion.
