IXQUICK is an example of a metasearch engine.

Metasearch engines simultaneously search the stored webpage records of several search engines (e.g., Google, Bing and Yahoo).

Best for: Getting an overview of your topic on the Web, seeing which search engines will produce the best results, and for simple searches.

Downside: They don't always include every available search engine in their search options.

Other metasearch engines: Metacrawler, Mamma.com and Dogpile.
