Changing the voice pitch, rate, and volume

Rate

• The default reading rate is 176 words per minute.
• The slowest rate is 70 words per minute.
• The fastest reading rate is 700 words per minute.
• HPR decreases and increases the rate by 10 words per minute. As you decrease or increase the rate, you can hear how slow or fast HPR speaks at each rate. This can help you choose the rate that is best for you.

Seven steps to change the reading rate:

1. Press the asterisk key on the numeric keypad to open the settings menu.
2. Press 8 and 2 on the numeric keypad to move up and down the settings menu until you hear the "speech settings" item.
3. Press 6 on the numeric keypad to hear the sub menu for speech settings.
4. Press 8 and 2 on the numeric keypad to move up and down the speech settings sub menu until you hear "rate".
5. Press the 4 and 6 keys on the numeric keypad to decrease and increase the rate of the speech.
6. Press the asterisk key on the numeric keypad to return to the settings menu.
7. Press the asterisk key on the numeric keypad again to return to normal mode.

Volume

Seven steps to change the volume:

1. Press the asterisk key on the numeric keypad to open the settings menu.
2. Press 8 and 2 on the numeric keypad to move up and down the settings menu until you hear the "speech settings" item.
3. Press 6 on the numeric keypad to hear the sub menu for speech settings.
4. Press 8 and 2 on the numeric keypad to move up and down the speech settings sub menu until you hear "volume".
5. Press the 4 and 6 keys on the numeric keypad to decrease and increase the volume.
6. Press the asterisk key on the numeric keypad to return to the settings menu.
7. Press the asterisk key on the numeric keypad again to return to normal mode.

Pitch

• The "pitch" setting is available only if you are not using a female voice to announce links.
• The default pitch is 118 Hertz.
• The lowest pitch is 39 Hertz.
• The highest pitch is 422 Hertz.
• HPR decreases or increases the pitch in 35 Hertz increments. As you decrease or increase the pitch, you can hear how low or high HPR speaks for each pitch level. This can help you choose the pitch that is best for you.

1. Press the asterisk key on the numeric keypad to open the settings menu.
2. Press 8 and 2 on the numeric keypad to move up and down the settings menu until you hear the "speech settings" item.
3. Press 6 on the numeric keypad to hear the sub menu for speech settings.
4. Press 8 and 2 on the numeric keypad to move up and down the speech settings sub menu until you hear "pitch".
5. Press the 4 and 6 keys on the numeric keypad to decrease and increase the pitch of the speech.
6. Press the asterisk key on the numeric keypad to return to the settings menu.
7. Press the asterisk key on the numeric keypad again to return to normal mode.
