How do I find...

Literary Criticism

Literary Criticism in a broad sense is the analysis and interpretation of literature.  Often, you will want criticism that is more in depth than what can be found in book reviews or on the free Web.  The fastest way to find this type of criticism is through peer reviewed journal articles and scholarly books.

Sample search strategies:

  • Title of work: e.g. their eyes were watching god; home to harlem; autobiography of an ex-colored man
  • Author: e.g. Zora Neale Hurston; Claude McKay
  • Themes: e.g.  identity; race and gender, duality, passing
  • Keyword combinations: e.g. (identity and McKay); [(orality or speeches or storytelling or rituals) and eyes were watching god]; (janie and eyes were watching god); (duality and autobiography of an ex-colored man); (authenticity and harlem renaissance)
