    • Bruce Cheong – Deputy Chief; organizes duty schedules and standby events
    • Nimit Saraiya – Publicity Chair; manages the LEMS website
    • Also, Ray Shupak - Logistics Captain; Charlie Concodora – Growth Chair
  • LEMS Organization Overview
    • composed of about 30 EMTs and also First Aiders who answer 911 calls on campus and standby off-campus events
    • founded 8 years ago so a faster response time could be achieved in case of emergencies on campus
    • main organizational focus on training
    • in the process of becoming a full-fledged volunteer squad; a LEMS response room will hopefully be obtained this semester
    • LEMS does not have an ambulance but about half of the people treated by LEMS do not need ambulance transport; thus, LEMS are the primary care providers
    • On call 24 hours on weekends and 12 hours (8PM – 8AM) on weekdays
      • Two-week rotating schedule for duty crews that is posted on the website
      • On average, LEMS covers 4 standby events/month
    • Crew chiefs (Doug, Kevin, Ricky, Bruce, Charlie, Ray) provide mentoring and guidance on emergency calls; new crew chiefs will be in service by the end of the month
      • If ever on a call, you are not comfortable or do not remember how to do a certain procedure, you don’t have to do it – crew chiefs will guide you or perform the procedure themselves
    • LEMS is looking for younger members who can take on leadership roles in the organization; many opportunities are available
  • Even if you are not planning to run with LEMS, CPR/First Aid certification are still extremely important and useful to have
  • At this point, it is necessary to respond from campus, making it more difficult for commuters to cover shifts; However, if you live off campus, contact lionsems@tcnj.edu and something can be worked out; once a 24-hour response room is obtained, this problem will be eliminated
  • To start riding with LEMS (very earliest date to ride is next week)
    • Come to next week’s Orientation in Travers/Wolfe 3:30 PM
      • Orange emergency equipment bags, radio protocols, and paperwork will be explained
    • Photocopy
      • Driver’s license
      • Student ID
      • Immunization record (yellow card)
      • Copy of all certifications
    • Obtain a physical and TB test at Health Services
      • The physical is free for LEMS members
      • A valid proof of TB test done by private physician is fine

Benefits of running with LEMS:

  • Unfortunately, LEMS duty crew member are not paid
  • Perks:
    • enjoyability & fun
    • help others
    • gain experience so you can handle emergency situations
    • learn to use medical equipment
    • get to know campus police
    • Annual End-of-Year LEMS Banquet for LEMS (with chocolate fountain!)
    • can get into almost all campus events free if you are on standby during the event
    • LEMS is currently trying to get priority registration for duty crew members

Kevin Mnich (Training and Personnel Captain)

·                     Training is a main LEMS focus

o       LEMS offers CPR and First Aid programs; once you have CPR & First Aid certification you can run with a crew; you DO NOT need to be an EMT to run on a duty shift

o       CPR/First Aid is a great way to see if you want to put in the time commitment for a full EMT training course

·         LEMS offers 1 CEU course/semester

o       past classes offered include ICS-100, ICS-200, Weapons of Mass Destruction

o       this semester planning to offer one of the following: Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Paramedic Assistance, Mass Casualty Drill, ICS

·         If interested in becoming an EMT

o                   Classes offered from 2nd-3rd week in January to the early May; 3-4 month course

in Mercer County; 2 days/week, every few Saturdays

o                   Skills learned for EMT transfer to daily life; strengthen your application

·         If you already have experience as an EMT, there is an opportunity to be moved up to be a crew chief and/or teaching others

·         If anyone is interested in becoming a CPR instructor, please contact Kevin mnich2@tcnj.edu

·         In the future, upcoming CEU classes in the area will be posted on a board at each LEMS meeting

·         To take the EMT training course, you must first have a CPR certification

·         CPR classes through Red Cross (1 year certification) will be offered on campus for $15

·         Tentatively considering offering a First Responder course on campus in the Spring

·         Rutgers recently held a CPR Symposium; in the future, LEMS may be able to participate by sending CPR instructors; if you are interested, it is possible to go as a CPR Instructor Aide
