History of Lambda Theta Alpha

The year was 1975 and it was the year we were born. Soon, thanks to the tremendous strides made by our 17 Founding Mothers, Lambda Theta Alpha would grow to become the first Latin sorority ever created to cater toward the needs of minorities and women in the nation.
Our Sisterhood has prospered and aged through the tumultuous 70’s and early 80’s seeing many advancements for minorities and women throughout the United States. Never doubting that their dream could become a reality, our Founding Mothers continued on, despite adversity and hindrance from those who despise change.

Today, we maintain very close ties to our Mothers, who without their strength, courage and womanly intuition and knowledge, we would not exist. Our Founding Mothers are all of our mothers, for they are the voice of the struggle within us and around us all. They were largely Latina and that is why we keep the Latin in our name, but among them were women of African and Indian descent as well. By embracing the Latino culture, a love of all cultures emerged. They believed and fought for the rights of all women and would grow to include women of many different ethnicity’s within only a few years. They believed in womanhood and in minority rights, and they believed in Lambda Theta Alpha. For their never-ending support and love, we pay them great homage.

History of Gamma Chapter

Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated, Gamma Chapter, was established at Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), on April 10th, 1981. Two inspiring, dedicated and uncompromising ladies by the names of

Violeta Rolon Sandoval and Carmen Milagros Figueroa

willingly pledged their hearts to the growth of Lambda Theta Alpha on the future of Gamma Chapter. Since 1981, Gamma Chapter has grown to have 21 lines (Line 21 - Fall 2004) of sisters who exemplify the ideals, goals and charisma of a true Lambda Lady.

Gamma Chapter has a strong and growing Alumni of over 50 successful Ladies, who just like Violeta and Carmen, found Unity, Love, and Respect in their hearts and each other, and vowed to keep it alive forever. Gamma Chapter has made a commitment to Lambda Theta Alpha to surpass the goals they have established and give to the sorority the quality of sisters it deserves.

Our sisters at Gamma Chapter have strong academic priorities, recognizing and supporting the importance of education in the Latina woman. Our sisters are leaders of the campus community, the surrounding community, and the Latino communities. Our sisters are compassionate, donating their precious time to those who are in need, honoring the importance of community service our founding mothers established. Finally, our sisters are hard working, holding sometimes two jobs, while attending school full time, understanding that to reach paradise we must conquer distress. Our sisters are the kind of sisters Lambda Theta Alpha invites, and later cultivates like a precious pearl.

We invite you to learn about our family at Gamma Chapter, and the rest of the chapters of Lambda Theta Alpha. But please do not be surprised to see that our greatness reaches many corners, from far up in Connecticut, to way down in Puerto Rico: For true greatness of the Latina lady is the

Lambda Theta Alpha way - the only way.
