Community

Community Service and Philanthropy:
Lambda Theta Alpha, Latin Sorority Incorporated has many national and local philanthropies. Each chapter dedicates itself to philanthropic aid of its own choice; thus, the sorority as a whole contributes to many different people in need. Women, minorities and children compose the nucleus of most of the philanthropic aid. However, we also devote time to promote "caring for the environment."

Through philanthropy, Lambda Theta Alpha hopes to unite people in service with their respective communities while allowing them to realize the importance of sharing problems and understanding their neighbor's concerns.

Community Service:
Another aspect that sisters of Lambda Theta Alpha pride themselves on is their devotion to the community. Since its inception in 1975, Lambda Theta Alpha has always excelled in community service. Not only do sisters "perform" community service, but they firmly believe in community activism, going out into the community and motivating others by instilling a passion to help others. This is the link, the common bond in unity, that is our passion.

Through our own self-assurance as valuable people in this universe we reach out to others, and many times learn things about ourselves we previously were unaware of in terms of our strengths and weaknessess.

As sisters and brothers of humanity we must acknowledge the universal truth that we as a people are only as strong as our weakest link. By empowering ourselves first, by learning our own cultures and where we come from, and by really understanding who we are (past, present, future) we will ALL finally be united.

Our founding mothers did just this over twenty years ago. They were mostly Latina, but because they loved learning and rediscovering their culture, they wanted others of different cultures to join them so they could do the same, and ultimately share their cultures. And for this reason, Lambda Theta Alpha is dedicated to not only one community, but many.

The Blue Ribbon Campaint: Our Chapter Philanthropy

Prevent Child Abuse is an organization that makes difference in the life of a child. One of the projects that the sisters of Gamma Chapter are involved in annually is the Blue Ribbon Campaign, which is Gamma Chapter's Philanthropy. Every year sisters put together many ribbons and information cards to hand out to the community throughout the month of April. This is a way for Gamma Chapter to inform the campus community one of the many steps that can be taken to save a child from abuse. Tables are set up every year to hand out blue ribbons during our Founder's Week. We receive a large amount of money through this and donate it to the Blue Ribbon Campaign National Headquarters. In the past, the donated money has also been given to the New Jersey Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse to help defray the costs of running the program.

Adopt-A-Highway

Adpot-A-Highway is a program in which organizations can sign up for a one-mile stretch of highway, and is held responsible for periodic cleanups. We have graciously sported the neon-orange vests on many occasions, and cleaned up garbage on our one-mile stretch on Route 1 in effort to maintain a cleaner and better environment. Every month Gamma Chapter participates in Adopt-A-Highway, as a monthly community service event. In the past, we have completed cleanups with our sisters from Iota Chapter (Rider University) and have done the cleanups together since our post are back to back. This gives us a chance to spend time with our wonderful sisters at Rider University while serving our community.

Educational Workshops

Gamma Chapters is known to exceed their goals of educational workshops and community services. The Sisters of Gamma Chapter are very creative when thinking of ideas for workshop ideas, implement the ideas well, and usually have a great turnout. Some workshop topics include: Time Management Workshop, The Latina's Role in Latin America, Planning Your Financial Future, The History of Greek Life, How to Get Straight A's, Safe Sex Workshop, and Inter-racial Relationship Workshop, among many others.
