We had to integrate some frames into it, which I would otherwise never do, but I did it and the result isn't at all bad, I don't think. - Webmaster Kate September 9, 2004 @ 9:34 AM Experimenting more with the frames for this website. I have also written my design proposal for this site. Also added a journal page to store old entries and some galleries for each class I am in. With the exception of the Previous Work gallery, there is precious little content in any of the galleries as yet. A programming-genius friend. We worked on it together and I am very, very pleased with the results. Go check it out! Apologies for the delay in updating, I've just moved into my new digs for the summer (some lovely townhouses), which meant I had to haul all of my stuff (and in the process, sprain a toe. That's right, I sprained my toe. Can you think of a more pathetic injury??) across campus in 2 hours. Wow is all I can say. Been working on my mom's genealogy website the last few days. Exploring PHP and MySQL to better develop it. So far, it's really cool! Expect some PHP overhauls to this site soon! In the meantime, updated the Webfairy graphics gallery and I have some site templates that I'm considering for a redesign of this site. There was nothing wrong with the script, I just changed the layout of the radio buttons and the variable names didn't come too. This way, I won't be getting votes for "arttechoriginal" templates because that would just be crazy! Also put some of my new PFM work up in the Freelance Gallery. Go there and have a look! On a side note, the person who a) knows how to pass a variable from a Flash document to a PHP script and b) goes to the Feedback Section and lets me know how or gives me his or her further contact info to work it out, will be the sun of my existence. I'm very excited to announce the PHP-modding of this website! The updates on the front of this site and in the journal page are now PHP-powered and generated. Also, the Quotes Page is now entirely PHP and database-driven. Check out the Quotes count function at the top of the page. As of this writing, there are 114 cherished quotes. Is one of them from you? Expect some more PHP overhauls and updates to this site soon. - Webmaster Kate June 2, 2006 @ 4:46 PM Well, here we go! A practically-new, much improved website launch. I've transferred this entire site over to PHP, with dynamic generation of headers, footers, and various other components. I've also gotten rid of the (*gag*) frames and switched to div tags. I figure, it's a better idea to, as my friend Andrew says, let the website do the work. My CSS skills have been much sharpened with this exercise, too. The style for everything is dictated by an externally-linked CSS file. In other news, I'm working in the Summer Research Program at TCNJ right now. I just finished creating the website for the project. Take a look at it; you can see that I no longer fear CSS. - Webmaster Kate June 3, 2006 @ 10:03PM Ni hao! Just putting the finishing touches on the new site design. Also figured out how to upload my video projects without devouring too much of my webspace or slowing down too many ISPs. I'm using the Flash 8 video encoder to make the .movs into .flvs, which means sick compression. We're talking going from 153mb to 4.4mb. Anyway, once they're in .flv (Flash video) format, I store them on the server, then provide the hyperlink to the Flash file (the .fla), and publish the resultant .swf file on the page. Some of my SWF files in the Flash Gallery were corrupted, so I had to remove the links while they're down for maintainence. Oh well, they'll be back soon. Not much else to tell at the moment. I got the Admin section working, with some help from a fellow programmer. Good to know that you really shouldn't write .htaccess files on a Mac. I need something else to work on....maybe an ACM site redesign... Not much else to tell right now. Working away for DADT and the Summer Research Program. And while I won't actually be going to SIGGRAPH this year (can't afford it), my name will be on Phil's Studio project, giving me something of an in to enter stuff next year. I'm thinking about modifying Quietus into something interactive, as they go more for that than straight-up digital video work. I've finished updating the 2D art and Maya galleries to a cool Flash interface. Check 'em out! Also, I've been updating and upgrading the ACM website and my mom's website as something cool to do at the moment. I've also got a new book with some cool Flash hacks to try out. I can't wait to give this stuff a shot. My buddy Andrew and I went to the Merchantville Birthday Party this weekend and thrift store hopping and shopping. It was pretty cool. I actually found and purchased one of those old desk clocks with the numbers that flip forward when the time changes. It's not an alarm clock, but it's still really cool. I'm about to start work in earnest on Lizzytish. Meanwhile in summer research, development for the content for Studio Array is going along nicely. Andrew and I are learning more about Javascript now. Since the program is going to be completely web-based, it's going to have to be powered by stuff like Flash and Javascript, at least for the time being. I don't yet know much Ajax and since we only have about a month left, there isn't much time to learn it for this project. I explained some of my PHP scripts to Andrew yesterday, including those I wrote for the priliminary ProfRecord program. Keeping all confidential information out of it, of course. He has to learn it for the database project he's working on with Dr. Pulimood. - Webmaster Kate June 21, 2006 @ 10:35 AM Behold the Studio prototype. It's a functioning community story-telling application. You can add to an online story and add an illustration, or start a new story. Choose an illustration by determining one through navigating the QTVR on the webpage. You need to have Flash, Javascript, and Quicktime enabled on your browser to view this. Speaking of which, I've not been terribly impressed with Linux distros of late. It's a good operating system to be sure and better than Windows in many respects, but it took me hours just to try to play a .wav file embedded on a webpage. Isn't Linux supposed to be a better alternative operating system because it's easier to use? I just don't know. Maybe I'll experiment with Mepis some more later since that wasn't the one I was trying last night. I'm starting to like Macs more, actually. They're rarely problematic. The worst thing so far is the bad sound quality, which can easily be remedied with some external speakers. I'll think about it. The spambots of the internet have picked up on my Contact form. I'm getting an average of 3 - 5 pieces of spam mailed to me that way per day. Stuff about homeowning and prescription drugs without a prescription. You know, all that fascinating stuff. Oh well. I might end up taking it down if there gets to be too much spam, but for now, I'll leave it. Or may be just externally link the email address from a protected file or something, I don't know yet. Going to get started helping Matt make his video presentation for Baltimore today.
