The central tenet of my teaching philosophy is to create successful, well rounded individuals out of my students. There are three main ways in which I hope to accomplish this goal as an educator. The first is to create a class atmosphere where students respect each other and feel comfortable enough to take risks with their learning. The second is to utilize a variety of instructional methodologies to engage my students’ different learning abilities. Finally, I hope to educate my students about the importance of social studies in their life and in doing so, help them become responsible, engaged citizens in the society in which they live. By focusing on these main themes as a teacher, it is my hope to turn my students into individuals who can succeed in any situation.
In order to reach my first goal, I need to set a healthy, positive tone for my classroom from the first day of school. I hope to achieve this through leading by example and by setting a positive “can do” attitude in my classroom. Additionally, I hope to create a mutual respect amongst my students by encouraging them to interact with their peers and to learn more from each other. By creating a healthy atmosphere in my classroom, my students will learn to be tolerant and respectful individuals.
Through employing a variety of instructional methodologies, I will be able to cater to the different needs and learning abilities of all my students. By using collaborative learning, personal reflection, critical writing skills, and student engaged discussion, I will allow students multiple avenues to utilize their strengths and build upon their weaknesses. These and other teaching methods will prepare my students for the world beyond school by providing them with the skills to succeed at any task they may encounter in the future.
It is also imperative that I help my students to see the relevance of social studies in their everyday lives. By connecting the past with the present, history can be brought to life and can help students to better understand the world in which they live. When students can understand why their world has become what it is, they will be better prepared to be engaged as responsible citizens.
Finally, it is important to remember that social studies can be fun. While accomplishing the goals outlined above, it is my hope to ensure that my students can enjoy themselves while still learning. I hope to accomplish this by incorporating appropriate humor into my classroom and by utilizing fun activities to aid with my students’ learning.
In conclusion, it is my belief that as an educator, I hold a part of my students’ future in my hands. It is imperative that I use all my skills, knowledge, and abilities to ensure that I provide my students with the tools they will need to become well rounded individuals who can succeed not only in my class, but in life. By accomplishing the goals outlined above, I believe I can be successful with this task.
