Lesson 9: Completion of the War of 1812
I. NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards
A. Discuss the background and major issues of the War of 1812.
This standard will be met through the introductory activity when the students read about the War of 1812 as well as during the class discussion concerning the material they read. In addition the group project will help students to better understand how average Americans felt about the War of 1812.
II. Learning Objectives
A. Students will be able to recognize the causes for the War of 1812.
B. Students will be able to analyze various opinions concerning the United States’ policy prior to the War of 1812.
C. Students will be able to explain the long and short term consequences of the War of 1812.
III. Materials
A. History Channel Video about the War of 1812
B. Graphic organizer containing pertinent information about History Channel video (Rob and I are awaiting the arrival of this video. Once we receive it we will be able to make the graphic organizer)
C. Graphic organizer with results of the War of 1812.
IV. Motivation
A. After the last groups have presented, the following question will be posed to the students: Do you think that the problems that caused the war were solved after the completion of the war?
V. Instruction and Activity
A. Class will begin with the last group presentations by any groups who have yet to present.
B. After the last presentation students will complete the motivational activity and the teacher will distribute a graphic organizer with the results of the War of 1812.
C. After discussing the motivational question a segment of the History Channel Video about the War of 1812 will be shown. Students will complete a study guide about the video while viewing it. After viewing the segment the class will discuss the video as well as go over the questions on the study guide. This will serve as a wrap up to the War of 1812 and the unit as a whole. While viewing, students should look for answers to the following questions:
i. How would the US be stronger now that the war is over?
ii. Did the war create any new problems?
D. Homework: How do you think the United States has changed between Washington’s inauguration and the end of the War of 1812? Write a minimum of two paragraphs. This will serve as a culminating authentic assessment to conclude the unit?
VI. Questions:
A. What were the results of the War of 1812?
B. Did the War of 1812 solve the problems that caused it?

VIII. Special Education Modifications
A. Repeat directions as needed and/or write them on the board.
B. Provide a graphic organizer for video.
C. All materials will follow COLA procedures.
D. Make sure homework assignment is not lengthy, time consuming or overwhelming.
IX. Assessment
A. Group presentations will serve as an authentic assessment on the War of 1812.
B. Study guide will be used to help students study for end of unit test/quiz.
C. Class discussion after completion of video will assess student understanding of the results of the War of 1812.
D. Homework will serve as a culminating authentic assessment.
