LATIN, SOUTH AMERICAN, AND CARIBBEAN HISTORY

Scope Note: There are important differences between the terms "Latin America" and "South America." "Latin America" is a cultural term which refers to the former Portuguese, Spanish and French colonies in Mexico and Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. It generally does not include former or actual British or Dutch colonies, such as Suriname, Belize, Curacao, or Trinidad. "South America" (like Central America and the Caribbean) is a geographical term which refers to a physical space. For clarity in this Web page, the term "Latin America" will include both the cultural and geographical distinctions noted above.

Race and Ethnic Relations in Latin America and the Caribbean: An Historical Dictionary and Bibliography (1980)
Divided into two parts. The first is a dictionary of topics, names and ethnic terms organized alphabetically, and the second is a bibliography organized by particular countries or regions. Handbook of Latin American Studies (HLAS)
http://lcweb2.loc.gov/hlas/

Maintained by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and updated monthly, this is probably the most extensive bibliographical source on Latin America. Link to "Search HLAS On-Line" for a search engine that supports searching by author, title, subject, and full-text (the latter refers to searches of the entire citation; there are no full-text documents in HLAS On-Line). Searches can also be limited by year (HLAS has been published annually in print version since 1935). In the list of citations, journal names are generally abbreviated, however a link to "Journals" will list the full title of the journals. Note: the TCNJ Library has the print volumes, 1940-1974, (REF Z1605.H23) in Old Reference Storage, lower floor of the library.

Maintained by the University of Texas Institute of Latin American Studies. A nicely organized site with links arranged both by country and subject. A search engine, which supports Boolean operators (and, or, not, near), allows for searches by specific topics. Probably the best single Web site on Latin American studies.

Historical Text Archive
http://www.msstate.edu/Archives/History/

Maintained by Mississippi State University, the Historical Text Archives provides digitized collections of many primary source materials. The link to "Latin America" leads to collections of sites organized by broad topic (e.g. Colonial Period, Regional Histories, Bibliographies, etc.)

Repositories of Primary Sources
http://www.uidaho.edu/special-collections/Other.Repositories.html

The University of Idaho has created links to thousands of libraries, museums, special collections, and archival centers throughout the world, each of which has on-line information regarding its primary source collection. Most of the sites provide descriptions of the collections and policies and procedures for accessing items. Many sites also have on-line finding aides and a number have digitized documents. However, since there are no annotations, there is no way of knowing what kind of information is available at each site without actually going to the site and exploring
