PROJECT 1: "The Machine Stops"

DEADLINE: DUE September 9
(you have two weeks!)

Make a website inspired by the 1909 short story "The Machine Stops" by E.M. Forester.

Part I, due next week
Please give the story one full reading. As you read the story a second time begin defining how you might interpret the story into a small website - a series of pages linked to one another... choose excerpts that stand out to you, take notes and make creative reflections - text or sketches. You may directly portray the story by drawing out principle ideas into images or you may use the story merely as a source of inspiration. For example, the story was written 99 years ago, it is an early example of science fiction that attempts to predict how distance communication may effect humanity. What do you think society will be like in a hundred years? Perhaps your website could be a communication manual from the future...

For next week use Adobe Illustrator or Word to make a Flow-Chart that maps the pages that you intend to present in your site. The site may draw directly from the essay or may be inspired by the concepts presented in the essay. You may sketch out your own science fiction short story. Also by next week create initial images (photos or illustrations or drawings) that you will use in the final site.

Please remember that you are expected to spend a minimum of six hours per week outside of class time on studio courses

Part II

The site must contain the following:

  1. A minimum of 6 pages linked to one another containing text and image (at least one original image embedded in each html page). These pages may be composed of excerpts from the story or ideas inspired by the story, each page should contain both text and image. Use Photoshop and/or Illustrator to create at least 6 original images inspired by the text.
  2. An index page with appropriate meta tags, title in the head tags and appropriate introduction to the content in the body tags.
  3. The use of tables to organize your content.
  4. Formatted Text using various text tags and attributes, however a maximum of three face fonts may be used.
  5. The use of hyperlinks to link your pages, please include at least one external link
