A content management system is a software system which allows for the organization, control, and publication of a variety of media. Such a system is especially vital to web publishing, where manuscripts are kept in electronic form as opposed to the traditional hard copy. Soft copies can be difficult to maintain and keep track of. Once a submission is entered, an editor reviews it before passing it onto a copyeditor, who finalizes the content. The submission is then laid out, and links or other related media may be added to it. During this process, there may be multiple copies of the submission circulating between editors, making it difficult to keep track of changes. Since a company will generally have many articles at a time, this problem is amplified. A content management system can simplify this. It can allow an author to enter their work into an editing application which, after the author is finished, will forward it to an editor and alert them of the new arrival. After the editors are satisfied with the story, it can be placed in a layout template to be displayed.

Development of a content management system has become more complex as new types of media are increasingly included in online submissions. These can include video clips, Flash objects, etc. The uploading and storage of these items from outside parties poses security issues for the server. Also, it is vital that the system have a functional, easy-to-use interface to allow the user to take advantage of all its capabilities without having an intimidating steep learning curve.

This project will focus on the content management system of the online magazine at The College of New Jersey, Unbound. While there is currently a working model of the system, we would like to extend its currently limited functionality to provide a more user-friendly interface and secure uploading system that works with the College's firewall.

This project is funded by the Collaborative Research Experience for Undergraduates.
