Interface Redesign
Karen DelDuca
Semester 2
4/9 - end of semester: Final report prepared; it can be viewed here and the poster from the school's presentation session as well as SIGCSE can be viewed here.
4/2: Usability testing to begin soon; contacting people, setting up meeting times
3/26: Continued tweaking code, working on paper.
3/12-3/15: SIGCSE conference. Participation in ACM Student Research Competition. Poster presentation on Thursday, 3/13, and oral presentation on Saturday, 3/15.
2/27 - 3/5: Final conference preparations.
2/13 - 2/20: Merged interface code with Alex's security enhancements, debugged and reworked small aspects to get everything working together
Reading new book: Don't Make Me Think by Steve Krug. Discusses major web usability issues.
2/6: Preparation for SIGCSE conference: creation of revised poster.
Began merging code with security features to prepare for testing.
Continued working on usability test, reading about usability testing, etc.
1/30: Preparation to perform usability tests on the interface. Studied common practices of such tests, especially a sample test. Begin designing usability test to be performed.
Semester 1
12/5: Poster presentations. Final poster design can be found here, and final report can be found here.
12/3: Designed research poster for upcoming poster presentation, revised final report
11/12 - 11/26 Continued with implementation of the site, as well as adding a description of design features to research report. Main design features include:
- Tabbed navigation for ease of use
- Consistant design which matches that of the reader's interface
- Easy to use submission form: less clicks and a WYSIWYG editor
- Tasks organized in a more intuitive manner, eliminating the need for a long list of task links
11/5: Worked on coding the actual interface, focusing on a clean, consistant design and more organized links. Reviewed current code to see what needed to be modified.
10/23 - 10/30: Worked on background for research paper, describing the purpose of Unbound, features of its content management system, reasons why the interface needs to be changed, and guidelines for its redesign.
10/9 - 10/16: Met with professor in charge of Unbound, discussed requirements of system. Created diagram of workflow to aid design. Began review of current code for Unbound interface, started outlining potential interface designs.
9/25 - 10/2: Submitted abstract of work to the SIGCSE ACM competition. Abstract can be found here.
9/18/07: Continued studying the HCI handbook, specifically the following:
- Suzanne Watzman, "Visual Design Principles for Usable Interfaces"
Criteria for good design, dicussion of fonts, colors, layouts, etc.
- Tom Stewart and David Travis, "Guidelines, Standards, and Style Guides"
Usability guidelines, heuristics, standards and their use
- Ben Shneiderman's Foreward
Not a "paper," but provides a good description of the key factors in interface design: usable, universal, useful
Began analysis of current Unbound interface. Major issues include organization and reducing the number of clicks
9/11/07: Continued research on interface design. Current books:
Raskin, Jef. The Humane Interface. Reading, Massachusettes: ACM Press, 2000.
- Written by creator of Macintosh project. Provides higher ideals of interface design, some of which are out of scope of project but good to note. Advocates overall change in the way people think about interfaces, but also provides practical guidelines about effective interfaces
Jacko, Julie A. and Sears, Andrew. The Human-Computer Interaction Handbook. Mahwah, New Jersey: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc., 2003.
- Huge collection of papers on HCI. Provides good overview of the subject. Details areas needed for improvement, what is/isn't effective, and has guidelines for specific design elements as well as overall characteristics of good design.
9/5/07: Began researching effective interface design, especially how it relates to content management systems. Papers of note:
Weitzman, L., Dean, S. E., Meliksetian, D., Gupta, K., Zhou, N., and Wu, J. 2002. Transforming the content management process at IBM.com. In Case Studies of the CHI2002|AIGA Experience Design FORUM (Minneapolis, Minnesota, April 20 - 21, 2002). CHI '02. ACM Press, New York, NY, 1-15. DOI= http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/507752.507757
- Provides good overview of a specific content management system, including interface tools presented and users' issues with the system
Beaudouin-Lafon, M. 2004. Designing interaction, not interfaces. In Proceedings of the Working Conference on Advanced Visual interfaces (Gallipoli, Italy, May 25 - 28, 2004). AVI '04. ACM Press, New York, NY, 15-22. DOI= http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/989863.989865
- Focuses on interfaces in general; discusses impact of good design and provides sample methodology for tailoring interface to users' needs. Discusses issues preventing advancement of well-designed interfaces
8/29/07: Orientation, discuss timeline, project goals
