What is the conceptual model of the pipeline process and presentation structure of an online magazine? What should the content look like and through what process is it produced?
Kelli Plasket

While there is a proliferation of online magazines, theory on design, especially as it impacts computer-based support systems is emerging at a snail’s pace. This is in part due to the fact that there has been very little headway in making them viable sources of income. Contrast this with design theory for animation and video game development, where the pipeline for development as well as “architecture” for generation systems (e.g. game engines) is prolific. Plasket, under guidance from Pearson, will research existing online magazines, both in terms of content and editorial (pipeline) process and develop an abstraction, a template if you will, of the essential processes and requisite support structures. She will also address mobile content and other issues related to online magazines. This analysis will inform the software development of CAFÉ.

How can the user interface support the editorial pipeline and content layout more effectively?
Jennifer Hurler

User interfaces are crucial to an application since they provide a gateway for the user to interact with the system, and deeply impact the user’s experience of the content. Hurler, under guidance from Wolz, will design and conduct formal usability studies of CAFÉ, open-ended wikis and at least one other, as yet to be identified content management system. Based on the analysis of the results, in collaboration with Wolz she will design a new interface that will also be accessible to people with disabilities.

How does the underlying architecture of CAFÉ support redesign of the user interface within the scope of an abstracted pipeline and presentation structure?
Siobhan Sabino

Editing written material online is challenging at best and none of the existing tools provide a good solution. Sabino, under Pulimood’s guidance will develop further and integrate into CAFÉ, the prototype proofreading tool that we have built as a proof of concept. She will work closely with Plasket and Hurler to bring their ideas to fruition.
