Robert Guarino is an Associate Professor of Music at TCNJ where he teaches
Mr. Guarino has also been the Vocal Ensemble Director for the New Jersey Governor’s School of the Arts. Prior to his appointment at TCNJ, Mr. Guarino was on the faculty of Westminster Choir College and was a member of the performing and instructional staff at New York City Opera Educational Department and Lincoln Center Student Performances.
In addition to his faculty responsibilities, Mr. Guarino enjoys a busy career as a tenor soloist in opera, oratorio, recital, and with symphony orchestras throughout the country. He has appeared with the Boston Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Harrisburg Symphony, The Opera Orchestra of New York, the Princeton Pro Musica, and the New Haven Chorale. He has been a soloist at Carnegie Hall in Bach’s B Minor Mass with the National Chorale, Bach’s St. John Passion, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C Minor, Berlioz’ Requiem with the St. Cecilia Chorus, and Handel’s Messiah with the Masterwork Chorus. In addition to being the tenor soloist for the National Choral Council’s “Messiah Sing-In” at Avery Fisher Hall, Mr. Guarino has appeared many times with the Long Island Choral Society. In 1996-97, he was its Artist-in-Residence.
Mr. Guarino has sung leading roles with Michigan Opera, Atlanta Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and the Opera Festival of New Jersey. He has won critical acclaim for roles spanning Renaissance to Contemporary—from Opera to Musical Theater. A frequent guest at music festivals throughout the country, Mr. Guarino has been a soloist at the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, Tanglewood, The New London Music Festival, PepsiCo Summerfare, the Wilmington Music Festival, and the Smithsonian Institution Chamber Music Festival.
Mr. Guarino’s first solo CD was released in 1996 on the Newport Classic label. It is the first complete recording of “36 Arie di Stile Antico,” a collection of Italian art songs by Stefano Donaudy. He is also featured on another Newport CD singing songs of Amy Beach and William Mayer. Mr. Guarino’s many awards include first prize in both the Washington International Competition for Singers and the Liederkranz Foundation Awards.
