Winston Hughes

Prior to coming to The College of New Jersey, Mr. Hughes was a music educator with the Edison Board of Education for nearly 40 years, most recently serving the district as the K-12 Supervisor of Music and Art.  In addition to his administrative duties, he also conducted the Edison High School Choirs who were the winners of several First Place and Overall Best awards during ten years of choral competitions held in Virginia, South Carolina, and Maryland.  In 1968, the Edison Jaycees honored him with the Outstanding Young Educator of the Year award.

Active as a choral conductor and teacher of voice for many years, Mr. Hughes has been a conductor/guest conductor for several community and school choral groups including the Madrigal Singers of the Newark Community School of the Arts; the 1977 New Jersey High School All-State Chorus; the 1980 All-Region High School Chorus in Richmond, Virginia; the 1988 Duke Ellington Chorus which performed with the Duke Ellington Orchestra; the 1987 and 1997 Region II High School Choruses; and the 1997 New York State School Music Association Area All-State Chorus.  For five years he was the Artistic Director of the Ric-Charles Choral Ensemble, noted for its classical to gospel singing repertoire and its performances with such notable artists as Nancy Wilson, Lou Rawls, William Warfield, and Maya Angelou.

Mr. Hughes is a past president of the Edison Supervisor’s Association; a past State president of the NJ American Choral Director’s Association and served on the boards of the American Choral Director’s Association, the New Jersey Philharmonic Glee Club and the New Jersey Music Educators Association where he chaired the Multicultural Music Committee.  He presently serves as the president of the NJ Retired Music Educators Association.  He belongs to several other music organizations including The National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).  In 2004, Mr. Hughes was inducted into the Perth Amboy High School Hall of Fame.  He remains active in music at TCNJ and as a performer with the group, Talent in Triplicate, as guest conductor, music consultant, music clinician and vocal coach for promising young singers.
