The Major in Music Education (MUST)
This degree program is for the student who wants to become the music teacher in a school. These teachers are responsible for instruction in only music. In general, these students may sit for the Praxis examination in Music. Upon graduation with a professional major in music education and upon passing the Praxis examination in Music, the student receives the Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree and is eligible for certification to teach kindergarten through grade 12 in the public schools of New Jersey. This initial certification requires the teacher education candidate to be provisionally certified for his or her first year of teaching. After one year of successful teaching, the candidate is eligible for a permanent certificate.
Furthermore, through successful passing of the Praxis examination and adherence to local statutes, students may become certified to teach in other states of the nation.
The Bachelor of Music in Music Education also prepares students for entrance to graduate school where they might wish to study musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory, composition, arrangement and orchestration, music business, advanced pedagogy, music therapy, collaborative musicianship or music law.
