Location:  Kansai Gaidai's two campuses (Nakamiya and Hotani) are located in Hirakata city (pop.: 408,000) near Osaka city, the second largest business metropolis next to Tokyo. Hirakata is also close to Kyoto and Nara, both of which are synonymous with "Japan's rich tradition." This Geographic advantage provides students with easy access to the centers of Osaka and Kyoto in little over half an hour by train.

Course Subjects:

Students take Japanese courses in the morning and Social Sciences, Humanities, Business/Economics, and Studio Art courses in the afternoon. Four courses, including Spoken Japanese, are the minimum required semester load (14 semester credits) for recognition as a full-time student. A student may register for a maximum of five courses (17 semester credits). All students must register for Spoken Japanese.

Housing:

Kansai Gaidai University offers its international students three types of housing arrangements: homestay, dormitory, and off-campus housing.

Homestay participation is strongly encouraged, for it is an excellent opportunity to acquire knowledge about the Japanese language and culture. On the other hand, with the increasing number of nationalities of international students, living in the dormitory will enable you to appreciate various cultural values from your fellow students.

Assistance in finding off-campus housing is provided primarily to those students who extend their stay into the second semester. Also, since there are no facilities available for spouses or children on-campus, those students with accompanying family members will be asked to take the off-campus option.
For more information, visit the housing website.

Special Notes:

The Asian Studies Program at Kansai Gaidai was originally established in the fall of 1972 as a one-year study abroad experience. 19 students from the United States participated in this inaugural year. Today, the program annually welcomes near 500 competitively selected students from more than 35 countries/regions. All of these students arrive here united in their desire to learn Japanese, deepen their understanding of Asia, and make new friends.

In our program, students take Japanese courses in the morning and Social Sciences, Humanities, Business/Economics, and Studio Art courses in the afternoon. The program provides students from all over the world with an opportunity to study and obtain firsthand knowledge of the culture and language of Japan. Efficient language instruction through the latest innovations, fully equipped laboratories, a wide variety of course offerings on Japan and Asia, unique Studio Art courses, experienced and qualified faculty members, along with various friendship programs, have all contributed to the rapid development of students' personal and intellectual growth.

Although our Asian Studies Program is designed as a one-year study abroad experience, students may elect to enroll for just one semester. While students may choose to enroll in either the fall or spring semester, it is advisable that students check with the targeted semester's course offerings.
