Bridge Program to the MSN

Who is eligible for this program?

This program is designed for RN's with a non-nursing BA or BS who wish to enter the Master of Science (MSN) program in either the clinical nurse leader program, or the nurse practitiner program specializing in adult, family, or neonatal advanced pracrtice.

Is this a graduate or undergraduate program?

As this program requires applicants to have an earned baccalaureate degree, it is considered part of our graduate studies program, but requires completion of some undergraduate courses.

How do I apply for the program?

Students must apply for this program by completing a Graduate Studies Application. Applicants need to indicate both the specific MSN track they plan to pursue (Adult NP, Family NP, Neonatal NP, or Clinical Nurse Leader) and their intent to enroll in the Bridge to MSN Program.

Is it possible to receieve a waiver for work experience in place of some of the bridge requirements?

Students who have significant community health expertise and experience may apply for a waiver of up to 8 credits of community health (NUR 440 and/or NUR 444). Waiver is based on a portfolio review by the Department of Nursing Faculty.

How long is the program?

Courses required for completion of the bridge program may be completed in two semesters of full-time study. The time required to complete the bridge requirments part-time will depend on indiviudal circumstances. The subsequent MSN program may be completed in two academic years plus two summers of full-time study.

Where and when do classes meet?

All nursing courses are held in Paul Loser Hall. Courses for the bridge program are typically offered between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM on Mondays or Wednesdays.

Who will be my faculty advisor?

Bridge students are advised by the Nursing Garaduate Coordinator.

What is the average class size?

Typical nursing classes range from 15 to 30 students. We strive to limit clinical groups to eight students (two fewer than the maximum allowed by state law).

Are distance learning courses or internet based classes offered?

While we currently do not offer distance learning options, we are actively exploring this possibility. The Department of Nursing emphasizes developing a community of nursing professionals. Our challenge is to find ways to present distance learning options while preserving the mentoring and collegial relationships fostered in our curriculum.

Are weekend courses offered?

The College of New Jersey does not currently offer any weekend course options.
