Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

Nurse Practitioner Programs

Topics

General Information.

Who are these programs for?

These programs are for RN's with a BSN who wish to enter advanced practice in the areas of adult, family or neonatal health, or clinical nurse leadership.

How long are the programs?

The ANP program consists of 42 credits and may be completed in two academic years of full-time study plus 2 summers. The FNP program consists of 47 credits and may be completed in two academic years of full-time study plus one summer. The NNP program consists of 37 credits and may be completed in two academic years of full-time study plus two summers. Students choosing to attend classes on a part-time basis must complete the MSN within six years of being accepted into the program.

What is the average class size?

Typical classes are small, ranging from an average of 6 students to a maximum of 15 per class.

Where and when do they meet?

All lecture and seminar classes are held on The College of New Jersey campus, except for the Neonatal NP specialty courses. The NNP program is a consortium based program and NNP specialty courses are offered on the Thomas Jefferson University campus in Philadelphia. Practicum sites vary (see below). Classes are offered on weekdays during the evening (beginning at 5:00).

What options do you offer for distance learning or internet based classes?

While we currently do not offer distance learning options, we are actively exploring this possibility. The School of Nursing at The College of New Jersey places great emphasis on its role in developing a community of nursing professionals. Our challenge is to find ways to present distance learning options while preserving the mentoring and collegial relationships fostered in our curriculum.

Do you offer weekend courses?

The College of New Jersey does not currently offer any weekend course options.

Practical Experiences

How many practical experiences will I be required to take?

The ANP program requires a total of 660 hours of clinical work in 4 different settings. The FNP program requires a total of 795 hours of clinical work in six different settings.

How many days per week are spent at each practicum site?

Students are required to commit up to two days each week to the practicum site.

Where will I do my practicum?

Practical experiences take place in a variety of local community-based agencies, including hospital clinics, nurse practitioner offices, community health clinics, etc.
