Who are these programs for?
These programs are for MSN-prepared nurses who wish to enter advanced practice in the areas of adult or family health.
How long is the program?
The ANP program consists of 43 credits and may be completed in two academic years plus two summers of full-time study. The FNP program consists of 43 credits and may be completed in two academic years plus two summers of full-time study. Students choosing to attend classes on a part-time basis must complete the program within six years of being accepted into the program.
What is the average class size?
Typical classes are small, ranging from an average of 6 students to a maximum of 15 per class.
Where and when do they meet?
All lecture and seminar classes are held on The College of New Jersey campus. Practicum sites vary (see below). Classes are offered on weekdays during the evening, typicallt beginning at 5:00 PM. Howver, students should be prepared to be flexible in order to meet classroom and clinical requirements.
What shoudl I know about the faculty?
The Faculty is comprised of dedicated nursing professionals representing a wide range of roles. All MSN courses are taught by advanced practice nurses (NP's, CNS's, etc.) who currently practice within their own area of clinical specialization. Our faculty members are highly student-focused, making themselves available and approachable to students both in and out of the classroom.
What options do you offer for distance learning or internet based classes?
While we currently do not offer distance learning options, we are actively exploring this possibility. The Department of Nursing at The College of New Jersey places great emphasis on its role in developing a community of nursing professionals. Our challenge is to find ways to present distance learning options while preserving the mentoring and collegial relationships fostered in our curriculum.
Do you offer weekend courses?
The College of New Jersey does not currently offer any weekend course options.
Practical Experiences
How many practical experiences will I be required to take?
The ANP program requires a total of 660 hours of clinical work in 4 different settings. The FNP program requires a total of 790 hours of clinical work in six different settings. The NNP program requires 743 hours of clinical work at Thomas Jefferson University as part of a conrtium arrangement.
How many days per week are spent at each practicum site?
Students are required to commit two days each week to the practicum site.
Where will I do my practicum?
Practical experiences take place in a variety of local community-based agencies, including hospital clinics, nurse practitioner offices, community health clinics, etc.
