Concerto Opportunity

Opportunity to solo with the orchestra.

Plans for the Spring Semester 2012 are in flux, and will be announced
in the first half of the Fall Semester 2011.

The tentative plan is as follows: in the first week of the Spring
Semester 2012, the director will hold auditions for student soloists
for an opportunity to solo with the string orchestra on March 4th,
8pm, in Mayo Hall.

So that the most number of soloists can have a chance to perform,
double and triple concerti are also welcome, and even encouraged.
Soloists or groups of soloists may also audition with isolated
movements from concerti.

The orchestra director must approve any piece for audition, because
this opportunity is not only for the soloist, but also for the
orchestra, and the piece in question must be appropriate
pedagogically.

VOICE:

Voice is a unique category: most of solo parts are not written for
single virtuoso, but are part of extended masses, oratorios, or operas
which also include choir. Sometimes there are opportunities for many
singers to perform as soloists (for example, in Spring of 2011, four
student soloists performed in the Mozart Requiem twice.) In other
years, the orchestra may just focus on instrumental works. Feel free
to email the director about your interests, but be aware that there
may be many programming factors in the decision to engage student
vocalists.
