All Music student members of the orchestra must register when accepted.

All students must obtain permission of their Assistant Dean to go over 18 credits (normally permission is based on a GPA of at least 3.0 or higher depending on academic record.

 

Non Majors with registration/schedule difficulties contact Dr. Tate as soon as possible.


Non Music Major TCNJ students will gain course credits towards the "Arts and Humanities" general education requirements. 2 semesters in orchestra = one course

The orchestra rehearses each Monday Evening from 7-9.50 pm. (Ensemble rehearsal room -basement Music Building) In addition there is a string sectional each Thursday afternoon 2 - 3.20 pm (Ensemble rehearsal room - basement Music Building.) Freshman who are interested in the orchestra may need to adjust the schedule, which may have been designed in advance for them, to avoid conflicts with the orchestra rehearsal times. Students who need advice regarding conflicts should contact Dr. Tate (ptate@tcnj.edu). The orchestra is open to all students on the TCNJ campus. Auditions take place during the first week of each semester. (Auditions in the second week may be arranged by appointment) Students sign up for an audition time on the 'orchestra sign up sheet' posted outside room 220 (Dr Tate's office) on the 2nd floor of the Music Building. Percussionists should not sign up but contact Dr Tate to arrange an audition time to ensure availability of equipment. All rehearsals are on Monday evenings except for the first one.

Students are required to:
 
 
* Play a piece (or part of a piece) which they know well. (Both slow and fast playing must be demonstrated - this may be achieved by playing part of a slow piece and part of another faster piece.)
* Play two major scales and one minor (if known) - all scales minimum two octaves ( three octaves if known)
* A chromatic scale - one octave winds/brass at speed over the range of the instrument) Strings slowly one octave. Clarinets are expected to own or purchase within 1 semester an A clarinet. Horn players should have some ability to transpose original horn parts in (for example, G, Eb.) for performance on the horn in F. Scales should be played both tongued/ separate bows and also slurred (strings - seven notes to a bow (Winds and brasses slurred and tongued .)
* Play a short sight reading exercise  (cellos/bassoons - including some tenor clef).

NB: The director reserves the right to ask students to play additional technical tasks in order to assess the students ability to cope with the orchestral repertoire.
