Biology Professor Receives Fellowship from Marine Biological Laboratory

Ewing , NJ . Donald Lovett ( Ewing , NJ ), biology professor at The College of New Jersey, received a fellowship in the amount of $7,550 from the Marine Biological Laboratory (MLB) in Woods Hole, Mass. With the fellowship, he plans to expand upon his research on osmoregulation in crabs.

For ten weeks this summer, rising senior biology majors Christopher Tanner (Byram Township, NJ) and Joan Lee (Ewing, NJ) will be working with Lovett at MBL on researching the regulation of salt content in the blood of crabs.

"The laboratory at Woods Hole is a community of internationally acclaimed scientists. People from all over the world go there to do research," Lovett said. "It is one of the premiere places for marine biology research in the world."   Since 1920, forty-nine people who have taught courses, taken courses, or done research at MBL have received Nobel Prizes in medicine, physiology, physics or chemistry.

Without the fellowship, only one student could accompany Lovett to Woods Hole, however with the financial support, he was pleased that he could offer such a prestigious opportunity to an additional student.

"This is an extremely rich and rewarding experience for the students as well as allowing me to get some important research done," Lovett said.   While conducting research, Lovett, Tanner and Lee will be able to interact with highly acclaimed investigators and their students who will also study at the laboratories.

For the past twenty years, Lovett has received numerous grants towards his research, the main focus of it being the osmoregulation of crabs, as well as the development of the shrimp digestive system, and relative growth in crustaceans.
