TCNJ receives $5,000 from National Starch in support of innovative student research
EWING, NJ ... The College of New Jersey has received $5,000 from the National Starch and Chemical Foundation to support an innovative summer research program.
In the eight-week program, students participate in research projects of faculty members in the Chemistry and Physics departments and meet weekly as a group to share their progress. Most of the student researchers will be sophomores, according to Don Hirsh, Ph.D., of the Chemistry faculty. "This program gives younger students an opportunity to be involved in research and creates a community of researchers that energize and support each other," explained Hirsh.
The contribution from National Starch supports the overall goals of the program by providing financial support for Heather Skiff (Whippany), chemistry '06, a more experienced student researcher who will serve as a mentor to younger students working with Hirsh.
National Starch and Chemical Company is headquartered in Bridgewater and is a worldwide manufacturer of adhesives, specialty polymers, electronic materials, and specialty industrial and food starches.
