TCNJ receives National Science Foundation funds for advancement of women in science

 

EWING, NJ … A high-powered team of principal investigators will use its recent National Science Foundation (NSF) award, one of several granted the College this year, to establish a program for the advancement of women in academics.

National Science Foundation LogoThe three-year, $688,132 grant will be used to develop a comprehensive model for career development for female faculty members at TCNJ, which will be integrated into the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

According to the proposal summary, the College follows a nationwide trend of underrepresentation: only 12 percent of TCNJ full professors of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are female, and women in social, behavioral, and economic sciences constitute just 27 percent of the top rank. As their statement says, “The potential thus exists for advancing this body of associate professors in addition to the untenured junior faculty who seek promotion.”

The principal investigator on this project is Lisa Grega, associate professor of mechanical engineering. Collaborators include Carol Bresnahan, provost and executive vice president of TCNJ, and Diane Bates, chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Senior personnel on this project include: Elizabeth Borland, associate professor of sociology; Karen Clark, associate professor of mathematics; Suriza van der Sandt, associate professor of mathematics; and Karen Yan, assistant professor of mechanical engineering. Collaboratively, these faculty members spent a year developing the proposal, titled "Partnerships for Adaptation, Implementation, and Dissemination (PAID): The College New Jersey's Advancement Program (TAP) to ADVANCE Female Faculty through Effective Career Development."

TAP will encompass four distinct focuses: mentorship, professional development, family-friendly policies, and equity assessment. It will borrow from the successful programs of several other institutions (including Hunter College of the City University of New York) and will be working with the Faculty Senate, the AFT, and Academic Affairs to create a committee that seeks to develop these policies and initiatives throughout the College.
