TCNJ Bonner Scholar embraces D.C. academia this summer

EWING, NJ …Rising sophomore Adam Sferlazzo will participate this summer in Georgetown University’s Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service. Sferlazzo, a Biomedical Engineering major and Bonner Scholar, will spend eight weeks in Washington D.C. enrolled in a dual learning program that combines a classroom study of philanthropy and voluntary associations with an internship at the Whitman-Walker Clinic, a non-profit health services institution. He arrived at Georgetown on June 6.

Adam SferlazzoThe Institute of Philanthropy and Voluntary Service selects undergraduate student applicants who regularly engage in service programs. In addition to enhancing their knowledge of philanthropy and gaining valuable experience in comprehensive internships, students at the Institute strengthen their volunteer skills by participating in service events and organizing fundraising and service projects.

At the university, Sferlazzo will study the history and ethics of philanthropic service in America and its relationship with U.S. government, with a focus on free-market fundamentals and philanthropy as an alternative to government intervention.

At the Whitman-Walker Clinic, Sferlazzo, who plans for a career in medicine, will shadow clinic doctors at work in a volunteer environment.

At the end of eight weeks, students at the Institute will award a grant to a worthy community organization of their choosing with the funds raised during the program.

Sferlazzo is a member of The College of New Jersey’s Bonner Scholar program, and will complete 300 hours of public service annually in exchange for academic credit and scholarship. He is also an executive board member of Water-Watch, the College’s environmental action club.
