TCNJ’s future lawyers go to (moot) court

EWING, NJ … For a third year, TCNJ's aspiring lawyers cut their teeth at the national collegiate moot court competition, held Jan. 15-16 at Florida International School of Law in Miami.

The two teams that progressed through the regional round of the American Collegiate Moot Court Association tournament went on to achieve considerable success in the national competition. The teams won a handful of victories and met with several close matches over two days of hypothetical trials.

Ryan Gerber, Jacki Shulman, Alex Berger, Elizabeth CarboneThe senior team, composed of political science major Jacki Shulman and philosophy/economics major Ryan Gerber, defeated a Texas team in the first round to rise to 46th place among 64 teams.

The pairing of junior political science majors Elizabeth Carbone and Alex Berger went even further, surviving the first day of competition with two wins and a tie, and ending the day ranked 17th. In the oratory competition, Carbone was rated 41st of 128 team members.

Daryl Fair, professor of political science, served as advisor to the student teams. The competitors were selected based on an in-class tournament, part of his Tutorial in Political Science: Moot Court, which is required for all political science majors.

Fair also heads TCNJ’s Pre-Law Advisor Committee, which helps prospective law school students to prepare for the application and testing processes.

According to the professor, all four of the students are planning to enter law school.
