Adviser

Two correct spellings exist for this word: adviser and advisor. The preferred TCNJ spelling is adviser.

Affect/Effect

Affect, as a verb, means to influence.

His illness will affect his attendance.

Effect, as a verb, means to cause.

We will effect a major reorganization of the division.

Alumni

Use the correct form of the word.

alum: singular male or female

alumnus: singular male

alumna: singular female

alumnae: plural female

alumni: plural male and plural when both men and women are included

Do not use the slash form alumnus/na. Use alumni to refer to all, or use alum, alumnus,or alumna to refer to each.

All alumni are invited to attend the event. All alums are invited to attend the event.

Designate birth names of alumnae.

Elizabeth Powell Fera '69, not Elizabeth (Powell) Fera '69

A.M./P.M.

In internal correspondance, letters and memos, use lowercase letters with periods for A.M. and P.M.

a.m. and p.m.

In professionally printed publications, use A.M. and P.M. in small caps.

It is redundant to use A.M. with in the morning or P.M. with in the afternoon or evening.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8 A.M., not The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8 A.M. in the morning.

See also: "Time."

Ampersand

Use the ampersand (&) only in corporate names or names of publications. Avoid all other uses.

Art Gallery

Use College Art Gallery on first reference. Do not use Holman Hall Art Gallery or Holman Art Gallery. Holman Hall is the location of the gallery, not its name. Use the gallery on second reference.

Athletic Alumni Hall of Fame

This is the proper name of the hall of fame that honors athletes from the College. The Hall of Fame is acceptable on second reference.

Athletics

Do not capitalize the names of sports such as football and baseball, even if the sport is preceded by the name of the school or the school mascot.

TCNJ football, Lions' baseball

For sports in which both men and women compete, the gender of the team must always be specified on first reference.

men's basketball

Never use girls or ladies to refer to women's teams. Use women. Never use boys to refer to men's teams. Use men.

When referring to teams, do not identify gender when the College only has one gender represented in that sport.

football, wrestling, golf, field hockey
Campus Buildings

See the end of this entry for a listing of the full names of the buildings on campus.

Use Holman Hall, Kendall Hall, Community Commons, etc., on first reference.

Use Holman, the facility, the building, the hall, etc., on second reference.

The use of the full names for buildings named after people, such as the Don C. Bliss Hall, or Marianna G. Packer Hall, is cumbersome in text and does not reflect current campus usage. However, the full names should be used for formal invitations or citations. The exceptions are Paul Loser Hall and Roscoe L. West Library, which should always be referred to by their full name.

Do not capitalize parts of buildings such as aquatic center, atrium, box office, information booth, fitness center, etc., unless they have an endowed name.

Powell Memorial Archives
