Emeriti Titles
 
Use the correct form of the word.

emeritus: singular male

emerita: singular female

emeritae: plural female

emeriti: plural male and plural when both men and women are included

Capitalize the correct version in titles either before or after the name.

Ensure/Insure
 
Ensure means to guarantee.

We will ensure that all funds are used wisely.

Insure refers to insurance.
 
Events
 
Capitalize the official name of campus events.

Commencement, Convocation

In references to events not named by the College, use the capitalization and numerals/ordinals established and used by the event sponsors.

the 12th Annual Special Olympics
 
Farther/Further
 
Farther refers to physical distance.

He ran farther than anyone else.

Further refers to an extension of time or degree.

He wants to further his studies.
 
Fax
 
Do not capitalize fax or write it in all caps. It is not an acronym; it is derived from the word facsimile.

Call or fax me with the information.

If using the word fax on a business card or in a listing, use the initial cap F followed by a parenthesis.

Fractions
 
Spell out fractions less than one, using hyphens between the words.

one-half, two-thirds
 
Government
 
General references to government are not capitalized.

the borough of Princeton, state funding, a federal grant


References to specific government agencies are capitalized.

Department of Education, New Jersey Council on the Arts, Federal Bureau of Investigation
Grade Point Average (GPA)
 
Do not hyphenate grade point average or put periods in its abbreviation. GPAs refer to numbers, not grades.

a GPA of 3.0, not a GPA of B

Historical Periods
 
Capitalize names of historical periods.

Baroque music, the Enlightenment, pre-Civil War


Use ordinals in reference to centuries.

Home page should be two words, not capitalized, with no hyphen.
 
Honors
 
Do not capitalize or italicize "cum laude," "magna cum laude," and "summa cum laude."
 
Hyphen
 
Hyphenate adjectival phrases formed of the adjective and noun preceding the noun modified.

first-class mail, four-story building, three-year program


Hyphenate African-American, Asian-American, etc., when used as adjectives.

African-American students, African-American Studies


Do not use a hyphen when the phrase is used as a noun.

A survey of Asian Americans indicates that...
 
Internet
 
The word Internet is a proper noun and should always be capitalized.
 
Lions' Stadium
 
Use Lions' Stadium on all references.

The apostrophe must be used as shown, after the s in Lions'.
 
Money
 
Do not include zeros for whole dollar amounts.

$4, not $4.00


Dollar amounts are set with zeros after the decimal point when they appear in the same context with fractional amounts.

The fee for the banquet
is $25.00 for adults and
$12.50 for children.
